Einstein theorized that your (or your ship's) mass would increase as you approached the SOL. And you would need infinite energy to accelerate to the SOL as your ship's mass would approach infinity. And since infinity is greater than the mass of the universe, you can't get a ship to reach the SOL.

Sci Fi tends to get around that by toying with the curved space theory. If space is curved then surely the fastest way from Point A to B would be not to move on the curve, but to go directly thru curved space (i.e, hyperspace, nullspace, nonspace, subspace)

Makes me wonder why DS is not going with the hyperspace idea.

well... that is a good point except for the fact that, there are many things that approach, and exceed the speed of light.

My main point here is, a Black Hole. Time dilation aside, the gravitational exceleration would bring you past the speed of light. Now bring time back into the equation, and the closer you get to the event horizion, the slower time travles, so you would spend an infinate ammount of time in an instant.

anyways, if we are to figure out FTL, the key will be Black holes. for sure.

It's Science Time again.

Point the first: Yes, in theory it's possible to travel FTL by using something known as a Alcubierre Drive, which warps space in order to not actually go faster than light. Problem is that current thinking suggests that the most practical way to do this requires something to set up a "path" at slower-than-light speeds that a ship can then use to travel along at FTL speeds. And the path is then used up. One shot only.

Most sci-fi goes for the "make it up" method of FTL travel, and conveniently forget that FTL drives are also time machines since you'd arrive before you left as far as anyone could tell. That, or they use some kind of "hyperspace" that changes the laws of physics, conveniently forgetting that the ship itself would have issues being dumped into a realm where everything is smaller/faster.

Next: I'm afraid that nothing can exceed the speed of light in a vacuum, and nothing has done so. This can be handily proven due to the fact that anything with a measurable mass would have an infinite mass when travelling at the speed of light. Anything with an infinite mass would collapse into a black hole of an infinite size, destroying the universe. Thankfully, the universe is still here.

Current theory is that space and time warp in order to preserve the speed of light, allowing objects to fall inwards at finite speeds but also dooming them to continue falling inwards.

The "infinite time falling into a black hole" thing is only true from the perspective of an outside observer. Due to gravitational time dilation, someone sitting a safe distance away would observe a hapless victim getting progressively more time dilated, and would never see them fall in, although the light from the victim would eventually become so redshifted that you wouldn't be able to see them at all. From their point of view, you would be falling in forever.

From YOUR point of view, however, you would fall in at the expected speed. Time dilation would cause the rest of the universe to speed up according to your perspective, and you would have a brief moment to witness forever just as you are crushed down to an infinitely small point.

speaking of jump effect, Anyone tough of a Warm up effect before the jump drives activates?

Like, Space particles goes toward the exhaust of the ships, a blue aura appears exhausting from the ship and then boom ship jumps, (Those who played "Armored core For answer" will understand what i mean)

Of course this would required a Change in the JD that once pressed a warm up with the effect of maximum of a Second and a half. don't think ti would change game play much, but would look really amazing

Nice idea visually.

Or how about a particle buildup appearing about a half length in front of the ship for about a second before *POOF* you go through it.....

... though that effect might suggest the use of a hyperspace drive rather than a FTL drive....

how about we all stop theorizing what we "think" it would look like at FTL speeds and say, grats games comin along nicely , i like the new doppler effect, and cant wait for the MV to merge.. and for carrier class ships to be able to launch scouts

Sounds like "Nexus Jupiter incident" XD that would work too
here is a pic of what i mean , a little

the big exhaust would be the energy build up on the engine right before jump, wouldn't that effect be n nice addition?

But hey im talking about a before jump effect, the during jump effect is already awesome as it is

Carriers? GIve us Torpedo Bombers for VS ships XD
