It is a different generation of ship, built for a different purpose and age. Maybe the designer on it was a big donut fan and liked things with rounded edges... I don't know. Make up some story as to why it is crazy.
Maybe they all suffer from a weak exohull which bulges in space. Thank gods the ship is made of flexible material so it can inflate like that...
Though more to the point, we only have one part time modeler (Tael), so replacing things is kind of limited by that little bottleneck.

That is fine, I made this thread with the purpose of getting the Command Carrier bumped up on the list of ships getting a remodel. If it makes the top of the list as a result of this thread, than I accomplished what I set out to do.
As much as I would love to make a new model for you guys, my initial attempts at modeling did not turn out too spectacularly so I stuck to programming instead.

If you've some skill at designing a look compatible with ICC's theme, I am sure that if you can make a basic model that resembles a ship, something can be done with it.
Google Sketchup is a free program with which you can model. Not sure if it allows importing to whatever is used for DarkSpace's models, but I'd think it easier to re-create a model than to model something entirely new.
I'm sure Tael wouldn't mind player submitted models that conform to DarkSpace's design standards. I can't tell you what those standards are though.

Heres an idea that has been running around my head a little...
How easy would it be to scale up the M277, and have it replace the Command Carrier instead of the Guppy?

If I'm not mistaken, DS's models are in .3ds, Sketchup has its own file format of .skp.
Sketchup does have a .3ds exporter, but that's only a feature of Sketchup Pro, which costs £321 ($475 ). I've had a look round for a .3ds exporter plugin, but nothing's turned up yet.
As it happens, a few years ago I made and posted a Sketchup model of the M-300 (it's floating around in the fan art forums somewhere).
If an exporter could be found, I'd be happy to try my hand at making some design suggestions, as I'm a lot more proficient at making stuff in Sketchup than I was when I made the ICC dread.

There is a free version of 3ds max but I forget its name. Its basically 3ds without some of the fancy things but it allows you to export into .3ds. I know this because I used to be pretty ok at modeling, don't know if I am any good anymore its been a long time since I did anything with that program.

I remember when I used to be into Homeworld 2 modding there were all kinds of links tossed around on Relic for different freeware modeling programs. If I remember right a few of them supported .3ds, I could go back and dig around and see if I can find any of that old stuff if anyone wants.

Here is an interesting suggestion I thought up...
Take the M400 Dreadnought hull, remove the two 'arms' and replace them with M277 Fighterbays, and improve the bottom fighter bay so it does not look like a featureless grey block. [ This Message was edited by: Leopard on 2010-05-25 07:38 ]

Two things:
1) The Carrier Cruiser == The Toad. Command Carrier == CC
2) The Command Carrier and Missile Dreads are both "Support" role ships. They do not fit the M400 classes design or theory. The wide arching bridge and the large separated engine pylons have very specific uses for each of the ships. They fill their roles perfectly, and look exactly the way 50 year old former UGTO Battle Dreadnoughts should look. Much in the same way that the M180 class Destroyers fill the support role of Escort and Missile Discipline, the designs are left over from the UGTO fleet overhaul that brought about the ST design classes.
Ok, a third thing... really, who cares? You SHOULD be spending most of your time looking at the enemy.

You realize you are making a bunch of assumptions here, right? By the way, the M300 is a converted civilian liner hull.

The Guppy Is the converted Civilian Liner Hull, the M300 is just an Old series of mass Produced dreads, only refitted with Modern weaponry and shei......."defensive system"
My opinion, yes its an old deisgn, but also Unique, Its Actually My favorite Model, don't ask me why.. sounds fine by me really [ This Message was edited by: Zero28 on 2010-05-25 20:34 ]
