Historically, the original Dreadnought was a Battleship variant with large caliber guns and very little in the way of smaller weaponry, mostly some light guns for close range defense against torpedo boats. You might consider it the prototype that everything after it was built on.

There's a good wiki article if anyone wants to read up on it.

So you think maybe, an new class of ships named battleships? Would be interesting to bridge the gape between cruisers and battleships with new type of ships. ^_^

you mean dreads right(as said above battleships are modern version of the dreadnought (most games go against this), thus I point you to battlecruiser class ships aka Pocket battleships(not the UGTO Battlecruiser) however a dev has said they will not make another class in a different thread

I don't think we need a ship in between Cruiser and Dreadnaught. Plus, if we added a whole new class, we'd need more than a single model. But yeah, there just don't seem to be a huge gap there to fill, and without a compelling reason, we're not going to go to that much effort.

Battleships by name are supposed to be smaller then dreadnoughts

to me the front of it looks like a UTGO dread, and the back looks like a ICC dread

i suggest more specialization in the roles of different ships, new class of battleship and dreads are vs dread / station hard to hit anything smaller kind of ships.

and definately need to up the damage on lower ships a bit, so 2 cruiser > dread 2 dessies > cruiser etc.

player numbers arent huge so need to popularize smaller ship types, otherwise noone flys anything but dreads, ever.

I believe the name dreadnought has been miscategorized through history. Battleships by their name imply Large warship. Dreadnoughts were used for a very short time but battleships are with exception of the modern carrier have always been the largest warships to ever exist (the yamato, iowa class, and the bizmark)

i think in having a new ship class it doesnt make much since to have a class between cruisers and dreads. However a class above dreads is not with out possibility whether be it an advanced dread class or specifically a new battleship class

A class between the dread and station would be nice, BUT it would require a whole shift in ship systems and firepower to fit it in. Dreads would lose some of there firepower and stations would gain some more to allow room for the new class. Cruisers may or may not be affected by this. Alternately you could just up station power and allow for the new class to be added.

But Enough hijacking this thread, get it back on track.

First draft for a high speed cruiser variant. keeping to what you want

devices
4x IE engine
1x tachion drive
2x composite armor (1x full, 1x fore)
4x reactive shields (standard setup)
2x aux fusion reactor (1x left, 1x right)

Armament
2x fighter
3x heavy gauss (fore)
4x anti-capital missile (fore) (when they are released, the high damage slow turn missile)
4x chemical laser (1x right fore, 1x left fore, 1x full, 1x fore)

This might just be exatly what we need to combat station spamming. Not to say missleboats dont exist already, but ships like the MD are so large that theyre easly overwhelmed. Since this one is smaller and faster they could keep up the attack even in close proximity to enemy forces.
