They give a great deal of thrust, but slow top speed and low energy generation. I don't have insight as to what people are modding with, that'll have to some from data mining, but my impression is that they're largely considered useless.
I think they used to have resistance to being damaged, which is a lifesaver when device damage was more pervasive.
In any case, this is a suggestion that our brilliant devs take a look at this device and see if they like how it is or if it can use some more sparkly.

It may just be me, but I use AFE on all my ships. PFE have horrid speed, and the difference in power generation between AFE and IE seems minimal at best. Another advantage to AFE is they add to your max energy amount, which is especially good for ships like the AC as it lets them get off another couple alphas before running out.

AFE = more max energy at the cost of regen and speed.
PFE = more energy regen at low speeds poorer as it moves up at the cost of max speed (same total energy as IE)
IE = best speed (for humans) good energy production at all speeds, med max energy

Engines are currently being re-evaluated and we have already looked at possibilities of changing how they are currently working. (energy generation calculations)
