It's interesting, but it's gonna be mostly lost ingame unless we play zoomed in.

Most model details are lost on me during play anyway. I don't make a habit out of zooming in far enough to actually recognise my Scout model beyond a vaguely recognisable shape.

Just some eye-candy for in-zoomers.

It's a bug. Unfortunately it's pushing us way past the normal poly limit's, and as a result won't be staying. The only real people who could support this would be the players with high-end systems, and we're not commited to supporting something that only the minority can use when it requires substantial work.

However, Faustus is looking into some low-level shader support which should make the game look much better. So whilst we taketh one thing away, we looketh into something else.

It's what makes all new games look good.

It's basicly bits of code that tell the graphics card how to render a particular 'thing'. For example, you could make K'luth ships shimmer out of view.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertex_shader
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel_shader

These are the two computational shaders we're looking into adding. Take note: this will not be a quick thing, and will take time.

Thank god that it's going... The K'luth ships look rediculous:

They would easily look a lot better if we got custom gadget models for K'luth-only devices, so they look like they're K'luth-built. Right now they're sharing many of the same gadget models with ICC and UGTO.

We'd also need to re-scale and re-position some of the devices. For example, that big round ball there is the Beacon launcher, which makes all three of the Scouts with it look kinda weird. If we were going to be keeping this as a feature, I'd shrink that down so it was far less obtrusive.

Agreed. Make sure that the guns coming out of Kluth ships aren't too genitalialy-looking.

If you do add new shader support, please do not shoot some of us in the foot. I typically only play DS on my laptop while I am going to and fro and it is great because there is not much that my laptop WILL run. DS fortunately runs quite happily, but I am worried that with new shader support it will no longer be able to do so.

Since I do not spend a lot of time at "home" it would effectively mean the end of my DS playing. And I am NOT going to pay for a new laptop just because I want to play DS, especially not when it works just fine for everything I need to use it for other than current shader tech.
