Re: the model itself -- While this is somewhat silly since existing ships don't follow the rules, it seems like there's a lot of extraneous parts. Basically, it seems like UGTO designers took an existing ship - the battle dread, say - and just added some random bits to it to make it more pokey and "snazzy."

I don't know; maybe I lack the proper ship design imagination, but I'm not particularly a fan.

What are the rules, actually, other than their distinctive hull shapes?

Anyway, you got it more or less right. It was meant to look snazzy in a way, since this is a game and well, it's gotta have some measure of visual appeal.

But yeah, thanks all for the comments, and I'll see what I can tweak around.

I didn't mean actual rules.. basically the "rule" of not having something that doesn't serve a purpose. But we're humans and our vehicles now certainly don't follow those rules either. That's all I was trying to say - its not a minimalist design, but then neither are the existing ships (especially ICC, with all their beams and bars and connection points).

Don't worry about me; I'm just one opinion and there seems to be plenty of others who love it.

Oh, yeah, I completely agree with Shig in that it's completely extravagant and is in no way realistic, but if we were going for realism everything would look pretty boring. Realism must give way to interesting gaming a lot of the time.

Actually it has been theorized that the most efficient starship would be spherical or ovoid in shape.

Seems like the Death Star has got it on right!

There are two basic schools of thought as to what would make the best ship hull.

The first is the sphere. It's got great manouevrability, and its volume-to-surface area ratio is good. It's also a good shape for tolerating damage.
However, a lot of its weight would be dedicated to structural support, and the girders would all have to be made in bendy shapes, making them more expensive. Additionally, there's a lot of "dead space" in the outer compartments because of the curved hull, meaning for example you can't pack a cargo room completely full of square crates.

The second is the long, thin needle. It can sustain more acceleration from its main engines and requires less structural support to keep it all together, meaning more mass for guns, armour, and tankage. It's also cheaper since you can make straight support girders fairly easily. Its turning speed is less than optimal, but in space combat that's often not an issue.
A significant advantage is that you can fit a really, really big gun all the way down the centre of the ship without too much issue.

Because you'll probably be shooting from hundreds of thousands of kilometres away, current thought suggests that the long thin shape is probably going to be preferred, even if it's potentially less resillient.

Update:
- Reduced the severity of the angles on the ship, making it slightly less angular and pointy

- Added texturing to the intake/bay area

We'll start taking angled looks here.
