Hi,
I'm new to Dark Space and i don't know what to do. I have started, gotten a few ships and collected resources. What should i start doing? i have looked in the manual so i know basics but i still don't know or understand what to do.
Help would be appreciated,

You work your way to the top of the ship food chain, do this by building, capping, shooting, repairing, and winning to gain prestiege, (which can be viewed ingame by pressing f5),
It'll start out slow at first (in pres gain), but as you get better ships, the pace will quickly picken up.
As an ensign, I recommend a supply ship as your main vessel for the first few ranks, as this is the easiest way to gain pres fast at your rank.
You should also familiarize yourself with the 3 major factions offered.
The UGTO, (United Galactric Trade Federation) A gung-ho navy who have superior armor and a balanced array of weapons.
The ICC (International Cultural Confederation) Rebels against the utgo who want freedom as much as the next feller, they have shield and pulse technology and arn't afraid to dish out as much damage as they can tank.
The K'Luth (No Acronym? No How) They are the aliens of every sci-fi genre, they have cloak technology and have amzing beam weapons.
Found your calling? Go ahead and make pals with your fellow fleetmates, teamwork means more victories and prestiege.

other games have XP, or experience points for levelling. DS uses Prestige.
It's just what it's called.

Click on the "Profile" button near the top of the window to see how much prestige you have
Looks like you need around 10 more prestige until you reach 2nd Lt.
Ranks
o Midshipman: Starting Rank
o Ensign: 40 Prestige
o 2nd Lieutenant: 80 Prestige
o 1st Lieutenant: 160 Prestige
o Lieutenant Commander: 320 Prestige
o Commander: 640 Prestige
o Captain: 1280 Prestige
o 2nd Rear Admiral: 2560 Prestige
o 1st Rear Admiral: 5120 Prestige
o Vice Admiral: 10240 Prestige
o Admiral: 20480 Prestige
o Fleet Admiral: 40960 Prestige
o Grand Admiral: 81920 Prestige
o Marshal: 163840 Prestige
o Chief Marshal: 327680 Prestige

ensigns cant fly sipply-ships
i think the first is around 1st lt.
