Hey everyone! As you know, the latest release was quite big. It includes graphic updates and most importantly, a system that eliminates desync. Now that this system is in place, the reason for tractor beams being unable to work on ships is now null and void. I propose we bring them back to their original usage.
Post if you agree!

I Agree... we didn't make that change because of ship desync..

I wish i was living in Jbuds reality, since in my reality the desync problems are much much muuuuch more common and worse than before the patch.
Before i could get some desyncs and when it was really bad it could last a minute or so before getting back on track, now desyncs are more common and the average desync seem to last longer too. Not to mention the server seems to think there is some problem with my internet or firewall and tells me to reconnect, wich seems to happen both during desync and when its working as it should.
Some desyncs are even stranger than before, now it sometimes happens that the chat doesnt update and things like beacons cant be fired while normal bullets/lasers/torps works AND i can see both ai and players flying around, not the mindless desync type but actually flying around turning either wich way, jumping and so on. If the game recovers ships warp around and are not where they seemed to be while the desync was going on... i think its also during these "strange" desyncs that the server decides to boot me off most of the time.
So blah, desyncs are far from fixed with this patch.

Desync is where your client and the server will fall out of sync and neither know about it. What you're describing is high packet loss or high latency. As the little box states, check your firewall, connection or router.
If you see ships flying awkwardly around or jerky movements, thats due to your client not receiving timely updates from the server and/or from packet loss. This can happen, but it's not something we can fix. Once the information leaves our server and ISP's network, there is little we can do to make sure it gets to you. The American Farm Bureau requested we remove them for infringement on their intellectual property.

The reason is... to make tractor beams useful (i.e. able to haul platforms around), I made it so the tractored object movement is absolutely in sync with the ship doing the tractoring. This has the negative side-effect of allowing a very small ship with a tractor beam to move a very large object (i.e. station) into planets and thus killing them instantly.
Since this would dramatically unbalance the game, tractoring ships is not allowed currently... only platforms and asteroids.

Split the difference. Old tractors & new tractors.
Call the new ones "Docking Beams" and the old ones "Capture Beams"
Old can lock onto ships & is same setup as the old beams & allows FUNFUN TRACT0RZSCOOTS!" time (a timeless DS tradition and a preemo way to deal with camping jackhats - ICC included). Dial down the speed at which it can push/pull objects, and call it a day. Docking Beams can't lock onto ships & stay the way they are.
