The old tractor beams (year +) couldn't pull a ship at 30gu. I recall 3 or 4 scouts being able to pull a station at around 10gu.

Just make it non-swapable on certain class ships only - Command Ships perhaps?

+1 on the "capture" tractor on Command Dreads.
Makes sense that only a ship the size of a dread can use tractors to push stations into planets.
Suicide rush! Decloak next to station at 15gu, hit tractor and push into planet before going down in a blaze of glory.

grappling beam: max range 250 gu, enemy ship cannot fly farther than 250 gu from beam origin, however this drains alot alot of energy

why not have it set to this:
when tractoring ships there is only one way u can do it and that is pull NOT push or hold
when tractoring other items like asteroids and platforms you can unlock the ability to push/pull/hold them.
also restrict that tractor beam to stations select few dreads engineering ships and perhaps supply ships

I'd like tractors to do something even more simple, I don't care if they can move people around, I want tractors to act as single ship dictors. Think about it, being able to hold a single ship is not nearly as powerful as being able to hold twenty. Right now a serious problem in MV is that nobody ever dies unless they are morons, it might be fun to change that . . . just a thought.

A idea to re-purpose tractor beams on ships so they can't be abused by running people into planets.
How about a tractor beam that slows ships speeds down?
Using the tractor beam would be a huge battery drain and has a range limit so the slowed ship can jump out to escape. But none the less still useful and adds a new tactic.

Ok dont forget the working of the tractor beam its a "Tractor Beam" for pulling but at the same time with a mere touch of 2 fingers "SHIFT+T"" it becomes a "Repulsor Beam" for Pushing.
Personally im with the Big Chief on this one what ever "F" Decides is the way it is simples.
Now drop,roll,and slide into game ...

the reason , why tractors cant lock player-ships anymore is that you can push other into planets ?
so why dont we change all tractor-slots to rear-arc ? this way you can only tow objects
ships can only fly forward so whereever the tractored object should go, you must have been there
(or you must do some great efforts to "spin" others aroung you)
AND you must expose your vulerable rear-armor all the time to the object
