Deep blue summer skies, lying down on the beach, relaxing to the sound of the waves against the shoreline. Exathra? What was I doing back at home?

It all seemed so real, except that it was cold. Damned cold actually. Strange. And then there was that distant thunder, gradually getting closer. Also strange, since there wasn't a dark cloud in sight. Then the ground seemed to convulse in a huge tremor as the sky turned blindingly white.

"Incoming! Get to cover!", someone screamed as I got shaken out of sleep. The ground a few hundred feet to my left seem to suddenly leap up in a huge wall of devastation. Finally out of my stupor, instinct took over as I grabbed my rifle and field pack and leapt to my feet scrambling for the nearest foxhole. All around, the snow covered ground was being pounded by incoming arty fire.

After a few minutes of continous bombardment, the order to fall back was given and the everyone began to take whatever they could and hotfoot it to the east.

Run... it was all that we could do. The situation had been the same for the past couple of days. Dig in, fight, then reposition. Rinse and repeat. Repositioning meant falling back. What else could we do?

******

It was supposed to have been a mop up operation. Only a few days ago, a fleet of ICC assault dreads and heavy cruisers had jumped into the vicinity of the Fargo Rock cluster, taking the small UGTO defending force there completely by surprise.

They had played it out well. Three Heavy cruisers had jumped in just beyond 4000 GUs from Fargo and got the attention of the lone Support Station, two EADs, and 2 Torp Cruisers which were in orbit. The UGTO's response was immediate. Both EADs and a Torp cruiser jumped at the bait, leaving the Support Station and lone escort Torp cruiser behind. As planned, an ICC Interdictor cruiser jumped in just behind them, keeping the attacking UGTO force trapped out there and the planet almost naked. All they could do was to start running back to the planet at sublight while exchanging fire with the baiting cruisers.

Accompanied by another Interdictor cruiser, a larger mixed force of several Assault Dreads, Heavy Cruisers and Combat Destroyers then jumped into planetary dictor field to begin their assault on the Support Station. Under withering fire, it wasn't long before both the Torp Cruiser and Support Station were destroyed. Another short battle with the returning UGTO dreads and cruiser resulted in minimal losses for the ICC and no UGTO survivors.

Finally the bombers jumped in and began raining neutron bombs on enemy troop positions, eliminating most of them before the dropships took us in for the final assault. Our 15th Infantry Division was tasked to eliminate any enemy units defending Fargo's shipyard and capture it intact if possible. We took it with minimal casualties in a short but brutal assault. Fargo Rock fell in a matter of hours.

A textbook perfect operation. We were finally about to kick the UGTO out of Tau Ceti. Like I said, it was supposed to be a mop up operation.

That is, until the K'luth arrived...

Perhaps Fleet Command should have known better. 24 hours after the drop, the fleet split up and worked towards Tiflis and Erebuni, both of Fargo's moons. The cluster was essentially defenseless, with no UGTO ships present and both moons having relatively weak planetary defenses. Tempting targets, too good to resist. And apparently, too good to be true too.

They were there. They were watching. And they were waiting. Waiting for that opportunity. They waited until the fleet had spread itself thin, and then they attacked. As the two ICC battlegroups entered their orbits around both moons, they were caught completely off guard by two larger forces of K'luth dreads and cruisers, supported by another two stations, decloaking off their stern arcs. Caught and dictored in between UGTO planetary defenses and the bright green-yellow beams of multiple disruptors and K'luth cannon fire, it wasn't long before the entire fleet suffered the same fate as the UGTO. Over the air, we overheard the desperate comms and distress calls between the ships in our dying fleet until silence finally prevailed.

We were left stranded on Fargo with no support, and no option but to dig in and wait. But wait for what?

The answer came only two days back as the as the telltale green glow of bio-bomb impacts came from the north. The 27th Division went completely off the air, and we began packing it in and moving east. We had to get away from this shipyard and into the mountains to get whatever cover we could from the sky above. On the move, we began to get reports of the 29th being attacked by hordes of K'luth Berserker units. The 29th, a heavy infantry division, went permanently off the air a couple of hours after that. We were just a light division, packing only half the firepower of what the 29th did. And if they got overrun, then we didn't stand a chance in hell against whatever was arrayed against us. We had to keep moving for higher ground. The rugged terrain would be hell to move across, but it would also provide better defensive cover.

We had our alien baptism of fire later that afternoon. Manuevering to the northeast to avoid the planet's Starport that was sure to be of interest to the enemy, we blundered into the path of a small K'luth unit from the north. The 15th was a veteran of countless encounters with UGTO forces, but none of us had ever seen battle with K'luth Berserkers before. It proved to be a nightmare we would not soon forget.

Our first warning of their presence was a few of the lead APCs being blown apart by incoming fire. Dismounting, we quickly spread out and took up defensive and defilade positions. They were relentless. Being under heavy support fire was bad enough. Close combat was worse. If you have ever seen those seemingly mindless K'luth Berserkers leap 15 to 20 feet into the air and then landing next to your comrades, picking them up and literally tearing them apart limb from limb, it changes your perspective of things. For every Berserker drone that we cut down, another one took its place. We had to fall back to avoid those close-in situations before it completely chewed us up. Keeping and killing those things at range was the only thing we could do.

After a retreating, running battle lasting over an hour, we finally wiped out most of the enemy unit and sent the remaining few drones running. Unit losses were bad, with almost a quarter KIA and another fifth wounded. That was just a skirmish with a partial-strength enemy unit. We knew we wouldn't last against a full-strength unit. We had to keep moving, and keep moving fast.

Over the next 48 hours, we encountered several other smaller enemy units which we managed to fight off and run from. As our losses mounted, unit morale began to fall, knowing that it was only a matter of time before the inevitable and unthinkable happened. We had to get off this damned rock somehow.

When we eventually made it into some foothills, it appeared that we had somehow shaken them off. With fatigue taking its toll, we decided to get some rest however short it may be.

******

Panting, I threw myself through the open hatch of the accelerating APC and glanced out the back. All around, the ground seemed to be randomly spouting out fountains of snow, fire, and smoke as the K'luth rained indirect fire down onto our hastily vacated positions.

A hundred feet to the rear, an APC turned into a bright blossom of death. More men gone, and no time to grief for them. Not now anyway. Incoming support fire seemed to be more intense than the last few encounters. We were possibly facing a larger enemy unit this time. Above me, the sound of gunfire was deafening as the specialist manning the turret let loose in the direction of the enemy. Through the smoke and chaos, I spotted an APC with the dual antennas ... the Command APC ... taking a hit from something that streaked across across my field of vision. The vehicle lifted into the air, coming apart at the seams in an ugly gout of fire and smoke as it rolled over and over. Add the C.O. to the list of casualties. Things were beginning to look grim.

As I slammed the hatch shut, the APC swung violently to one side as enemy arty fire landed close by. The ding of fragments against the vehicle's armor rang loud and then there was a sudden, relative silence. I felt a slick wetness against one side of my face and realized that the gunfire above me had stopped. As I looked up, the specialist... or what was left of him, dropped down into the cabin, everything above his waist gone. Blood and viscera were all over the APC's cabin. Some of the men began praying or crying, their sanity finally stretched to their limits.

Then as quickly as the assault began, it suddenly stopped. The 15th continued our hasty eastward retreat even as the enemy inexplicably ceased firing on us and turned back. What the hell? But it didn't matter. We just kept running for the next half hour before we finally slowed to check our rear and flanks for a possible ambush.

When we finally stopped and dismounted to once again take up defensive positions, we received comms from other surviving friendly units that the K'luth had simply fallen back to their dropships and taken off. No one knew why. Even when another ICC battlegroup jumped in and took up orbit about 12 hours later, no one still had any answers. It was as if they attacked us just for the sake of attacking us and then leave without taking a thing. It didn't make any sense strategically or tactically, but it didn't matter.

I survived. We survived, somehow. They had come for Fargo, nearly nailing us to the wall, and then they suddenly left for no apparent reason.

It just didn't matter. Nothing did anymore, not after what we had just gone through.

Just gives me an urge for me to force the devs to Make DSA a bit faster... imagine a K'luth Berserker jump 15-20 meters in the air and Pile Drive you into the ground with a Vibroblade? And the blood just spewing out of your mangled body... imagine it.

Great Story Kenny =) It was actually really interesting, I dropped my apple reading this =)
