Quote:

* Be polite and don't let your argument include any bickering, sniping, or anything malicious. Remeber that it's about resolving a disagreement, not hurting the other party (or parties).
* Stay on topic. Remember what you're arguing about and don't move on to other topics just because your emotions are running higher than usual.
* Remember that it's more important to diffuse the tension than resolve an argument. Many arguments can just be let go because they're not important. Don't struggle to always get the last word in.

As we've noted, it's very easy to turn into an $?%&^$@%?#~ and cause yourself a wealth of problems. Try to keep a cool head when arguing and you'll find yourself much more successful. The more polite and calm you remain the less likely that the argument will escalate into a shouting match, since you're just fueling the fire at that point. Instead of grasping at the anger in the moment, concentrate on the outcome. You want it to be good and everyone to end up happy in the end, so stay calm. It's hard to be mean to someone who's continually kind, so keeping a level head—even if you have to fake it—will make your arguments turn out a lot better.

Yeah... Funnily enough, the more technical meaning of argument has nothing to do with shouting at each other. From a critical thinking perspective, making an argument involves persuading by presenting things in a logical, thought-out manner.

For example, I could argue that you should eat bran flakes because they are high in fibre and healthy for you, according to several scientific studies [citation needed].

What is NOT an argument is telling you to eat your bran flakes because you suck, noob.

This random rambling brought to you by Written-at-5a.m. Industries.

When I read the topic I was fully expecting a Monty Python video, lol.

I'm sure there's one out there that's relevant, let's see it!

This is the internet. As long as there is anonymity, there will always be that one person who shouts the loudest, and his words will be the most vulgar, and the argument will then always center around those words.

Always. It is the way, and it shall always be this way. As has been foretold.

That's far different than the way we do it.

In America, "He who has the biggest wallet wins".

In Washington DC "He who has the biggest gun wins"

In Texas "He who has the quickest wit wins".

Monty Python has a skit about a guy who goes to an inner-company department for argueing. Its a real classic actually. I believe it was on Life of Brian maybe.......

As it teaches at both college/A level (A levels being English version of college stuffs) and university level education you should always make an argument starting with your theory or suggestion followed by a 'argument' between the pros, cons, different theories and possible issues which should be immediately followed up with a reason why your argument is more valid than those in a conclusion format.

Basically, you say what you believe followed by what others believe and why but then go on to say the reasons why you believe what you do and why the other theories are flawed or incorrect in a kind of back and forth 'all round' argument.

You would be suprised how many people argue without considering all possible points of view in this format on the internet. (Which eventually lead to comments along the lines of "Why the hell are you contradicting yourself?" and "LOLOL NOOB" because they don't understand what you are saying)
