having a day that is a memory of past harms and a celebration of the work that was done, often with blood sweat and tears, to overcome those harms is not a bad idea. otherwise we wouldnt bother celebrating remembrance day, etc.
women have been systematically and totally suppressed and abused for centuries, and sadly we have not actually achieve full equality, regardless of how any of you might personally feel. women go to work and then come home to take care of families, effectively working 2 jobs without recognition. women continue to be paid a great deal less than men - salary rates are very close to being equal, but unequal pay persists through bonus systems etc. gender discrimination has also been heavily racialized; how many maids or housekeepers do you know that are latino or philipino women? most of them leave their families in their home country to try and earn money in the west, which in turn further burdens women in those societies that are even less equal than our own.
maybe you or i havent seen or felt gender inequality lately, but its just as real today as racism against blacks or any other form of discrimination. you might also do well to consider that some of the things you do everyday might reinforce a system of gender inequality without your even realising it. someone posted about how the two women in their apartment baked for them; why dont you bake something for them? passively allowing people to fall into socially constructed gender roles, and failing to challenge your own, is not going to help.

It happens.
Women cook, bake, give birth.
Men work, bring back the dough, etc
Not just gender roles. Social roles too.
Farmers give birth to children who will most likely become farmers themselves. Ditto the blue collar hillbilly somewhere in the Southwest who's a welder in a factory. His kid will most likely be blue collar too.
That's life.

Lark does have a point; the topic title should be more along the lines of "happy women's rights day".
Basically, everyone should be equal in the sense that everyone should be free to try and do whatever they want to do, rather than being trapped by gender or race roles.
However, at the same time people are different, and different people will want to do different things. Men and women tend to have different physical and mental makeups on average, which means that you will, for example, have fewer female bricklayers because they don't have the upper body strength.
That doesn't mean that those that want to be bricklayers shouldn't be allowed, though. Legislating that all professions should have a perfect gender balance is impractical, but one can legislate that all people have the right to do whatever they want.

Ahh but then you get into problems like changing the firefighter's entrance exams to make it easier for women to carry adults out of harm's way.
There are some professions where there's just going to be inequality due to the nature of the job. I don't think you disagree, I'm just saying. They should be given the opportunity to take the test, but the test itself should not be changed to make it easier, because the original test reflects the realities of the job.
You know what I mean.

I don't have a problem with a day set aside to remember a milestone, if it helps someone feel empowered to try their luck at success then more power to them.
Although, since it's already been brought up.....

This is exactly what the US has a track record of doing, going beyond "you have the right to be treated equally" into "you'll give them special consideration because they're a minority". I'd go into detail about how so called "equal rights" ruined the heating and cooling business my Grandfather started, but it would probably be considered political talk so I'll just leave it at that.
