You need to use 3dsmax, DarkSpace has a new model importer that will support FBX format. The best way is to pack all the textures into the same file using the option to embed media.

Please note, just because you create a model, even if it is awesome, it may not actually make it in-game. However there is no problem in giving it a go so long as you keep this in mind.

Ship size and polygon requirements are below as per the DarkSpace developer guide:

2.3.2 Ship Classes
This section will explain the differences between each ship class and the overall role which each particular class plays within the DarkSpace Universe.

No model should exceed 3000 polygons. This is to maintain compatibility with older games and computer systems.

Scouts are designed to be fast, maneuverable and capable of extended forays into deep space. Most scout ships will be equipped with advanced sensory systems which enable them to perform target acquisition and covert monitoring.

The UGTO Scouts tend to broader than their overall length (60L, 90B, 20D).

ICC Scouts are generally longer than UGTO variants, but a lot slimmer across the beam (90L, 60B, 20D).

K'Luth scouts are larger in overall mass than their UGTO and ICC counterparts (80L, 90B, 20D), this is representative of the larger weapon arrays installed on these vessels.

Advice: dont waste ur time trying to do ship models for darkspace. Many have tried and yet i still see no new design for any ships in game.
