i'll just give the facts:
- when you self-destruct you'll overload your engines resultilng in a bigger/ more damaging bang
- your crew have to evacuate the ship before the sd, resulting in an increased sd-timer (eg. 20-30secs)
- unlike the normal destruction of the ship the crew is safed, resulting in a smaler prestige-drop for the player (only 50-60% of the loss from a normal death)
coments plz

Question.
What's the diff between your ship getting zapped by the enemy, thereby blowing up the engine, the ammo onboard, the capacitors on your charged weapons, etc etc....
And your ship being set for self destruct, where by you blow up the engine, the ammo onboard, the capacitors on your charged weapons, etc etc....

exactly because with turreted weapons you can aim them at any nearby vital systems.
or enter a computer virus that makes the guns ready to explode taking out the ammo assembly and any attached generator putting a match to your fuel and watching the explosion and all that jazz when you got a ship with 20000 souls that just love blowing up so you suvive.

Right, so if you were to slit your own throat, you would die more dramatically then if I were to slit your throat in the exact same way?
The way I see it... the only difference in being blown up by the enemy, and blowing yourself up.....
.... is irony.

The SD system was nerfed for a reason.
We're really not looking into bringing back an alternative.

In my personal opinion, self-destructing isn't particularly fun for the people who are trying to kill you, since you're denying them prestige and the satisfaction of a kill.
So rewarding people for self-destructing is a bad idea, since it would promote highly annoying tactics.

most ships under fire wont last 30seconds until they explode

How about this,
At 5 seconds weapons overload causeing 20% extra damage.
At 10 seconds weapons bun out and go offline for 1.4 seconds and come back online at 5% power.
At 15 seconds ship will expload casueing 30% of a ships total shield Armor & hull capasity.
Being the total Hull, Armor and Shield capability of the ship self destructing.
--Secondary suggestion/addition forum hijack--
Add hull shield and armor totals to a ships status to other players. [ This Message was edited by: Inductive Soul on 2011-04-26 06:11 ]

The only thing i would like to see but has already been shot down by Faustus years ago.
Ramming!
Get below a certain percentage of hull (4%?), the nearest enemy ship you run into, you explode. giving that enemy ship extra damage in the process.
Nothing beats being able to say: /Y RAMMING SPEED !!

That's what the long countdown is for.
I've always liked the self-destruct seen at the end of Wrath of Khan. It took time but the explosion was devastating. Darkspace doesn't need self-destructs of that magnitude but I wouldn't mind a long countdown with a larger explosion than would have occured if it was due to a crash or enemy (or friendly) fire.
(with some sort of visual cue that lets everyone know it's counting down to SD. Maybe the ship has a pulsing glow or something.)
I don't like the idea of lowering prestige drop. Losing a ship is losing a ship. [ This Message was edited by: General Zod on 2011-04-26 15:23 ]

It would be amusing to enable ship collisions once you activate the SD timer, just ram into someone to trigger it before the countdown finishes.
