You know i've ben thinking of a dark space extenstion were insead of space ships this time its feutureristic ships that hover over the waves and of couser theres diffrent models of ships fore each faction in DS and theres islans that player have to conqure and build and the game is built around an ai population that learns as the game progresses. its a complicated consept i wrote down. but i think it would be cool if DS had an extenstion were ww2 feutureristic looking ships cruis around blasting each other and seasing land and sea territories across a vast ocean planit

some game concept input:
make it a sort of cloud-city style thing.
instead of islands, have floating bases (this also adds stylistic choices - you can make them any size or shape you want and theyd still be "to scale" to the airships),
have large cloud masses moving around, perhaps with storms and what not, providing visual cover and other effects.
have atmosphereic pressure increase as a vessel descends, with certain vessels having better depth/height ranges than others (airship that looks like a submarine can go pretty far up and down, but would limitations on everything else as a result of weight restrictions - cant make a giant metal tube and have big cannons too!)
area specific damage would be neat: ships with easily accessible gas containers could be forced lower by shooting them up.
faction access to types of gas would effect their reaction to enemy fire, and gas and ballast mines would be highly sought after resource points.

I wonder.... What tech are these ships using to fly?
Hydrogen/helium?
Some kinda mumbo-jumbo anti gravity device?
Props or jet vertical thrusters?
Or some floating rocks like Magicite/nethicide (FF XII), unobtanium (Avatar), or in the case of Iron Grip; rocks/elements that float when electricity is applied?

I've got a second one just out. Putting the finishing touches.
It's more bulbous and bottom heavy. Still has a naval superstructure on the top hull though. 1 turret up top and another underslung turret.

Originally it would have been Hydrogen/helium, but its looking more likely to be AG tech with plasma thrusters.
Story will probably be some crap about a lost colony/terraformer ship that crash lands on some toxic planet and the colonists are somehow prevented from getting back into space. Fight for resources based on two belief systems and what should be done etc yadayadayada.
Due to being based on DS/medusa engine, there would be no altitude adjustment available so the combat style would be very similar.

Sounds great. Imagine if u coulda made it a magic + technology world.
Fill us in more on the backstory, esp propulsion and weapon's tech, so we can help model the ships accordingly. Also any factional design characteristics.
BTW, for the AG tech, do u wanna see those glowing disc AG protrusions like in those Matrix (movie) hovercrafts?

What happens when two ships come in contact with one another? I do not think the vertical system implemented in DarkSpace would be very fitting. Could they just bounce off each other causing some damage?

Behavior would be identical.
Right now we are literally just talking about a map mod. The UI etc would all be identical and initially it would be a case of spawn from gates (or towers), with no build-able structures.
Once the basic mod is done (which I am working on), we can think about sharding it to it's own client through GCQL. That probably won't happen to be honest, as the work involved would be immense.

2nd airship sample. Also done in about 6 hours. More economical with the polys this time.
Also another ship inspired design. But with a turret each on the dorsal and ventral hull. This time the superstructure is closely modeled on a US Navy Destroyer. I forgot which class it was.
Added in many broadside twin cannons.

That design makes a lot more sense for something in the air as opposed to something on the water, there's really no reason NOT to put turrets on the bottom as well since it's not something that would be landing on solid ground.
