i'm thinking about a way to help new players to understand the game

how about to (re-)introduce a tutorial-level ?

when an account is created, and the player should (skippable) play on a small map, where the player learn the basics.
the players are alone, but are guided by a onscreen tutorial.
the map shouldnt be a big one, just a star and 2 planets, one friendly (human (ugto/icc-alliance)) one hostile (k'luth)
for each task, the player should be put into a ship able to fulfill the objective

things, the players should learn:
- moving the ship (icc-scout)
-- flying around
-- jumping
-- orbiting / following / etc

- combat against small ai-ships(UGTO-Interceptor Frigate)
-- eg player (frig) vs ai (scouts)

- re-supping ships(icc-ressuply ship)
-- spawning a damaged dessy at 50% and the player must bring it to 100% hull
-- or a damaged dread, and after the player started to repair it, some ai-friggs are spawned and help him

- capping planets(ugto-trasport)
-- a planet revolts, and the player must recapture it (with ai-support)

- building planets(icc-light engineer)
-- the captured planet is razed after capture and the player must rebuild the basic structures
-- eg up to a starport
-- build-speed and so are increased to it doesnt get too boring
-- maybe the player should also build a platform or so in space

--------------------------

Players who completed the tutorial should get some reward for completing it
- Ensign for completing the movement-tutorial
- Bronze Support for completing the support-tutorial
- Bronze Engineering for completing the build-tutorial
- 2nd Lieutenant for completing the entire tutorial (so they can fly the ship-types used in the tutorial)

if a player decides to skip or finished the tutorial, he cant go back
and skipping the tutorial remove the chance for some easy pres

the tutorial-map should be instanced, and each player get his own

---------------------------

i know, im generous to new players, but it could help to skip the difficult ( pvp vs other player) / boring ( supply others till you vomiting ) parts for starters

------------------------------

oppinions ?

I like it, but it shouldn't be limited to just the human factions...

maybe ugto and k'luth could be changed, so that the new players could be introduced to (basics !!) of shield-rotating and cloaking

it wasnt ment to be "hey guys, the luth are the bad ones"

Good idea.. might reduce the learning curve... and spawn them in saggitarius after it so they got to the part of the MV that has players

Good idea; after all, the UGTO are the true bad guys.

I like it, and if there is a way to accelerate new players into the game, it eliminates any objections I may have on spawning them in Sag.

I llike it because this eliminates the new players who come into the game and leave because its too hard , like my cousin did.

There use to be a tutorial many years ago. It covered pretty much the basics of what the original poster listed above. No idea why it got pulled.

I even have a friend who i tried to get into Darkspace, and he said this game is harder than EVE (I kid you not) to get started and we all know how hard EVE is for beginners but at least they have a form of a tutorial. If he says that and hes a pretty compentant player, then I wonder how many more new players we are turning away without teach them the basics.
To have players or mods in the lobby to point them to the manual is not good enough.

Actual lore or just player bias?

The original tutorial got pulled because it no-longer worked after a few core game changes, and we didn't have the time to re-do it all. After this version is done we'll likely start working towards intergrating a tutorial into the game, rather than a seperate map.
