I have a remark to make about the ranking system.

Obviously this subject is something completely frivolous. Just an idea!
Although we're in space, our "military" system is based on the one of the old navies. Therefore we fly "ships" and there are such ranks as "Midshipman" or "Admiral".
But "Marshal" is not a typical rank of any navy, much more something for the Army or Air force (e.g. Field Marshal, Marshal of the air etc etc.)

Therefore my suggestion is to rename and re-organize the ranking system based on the common military ranks of the navies of the anglophone world.

Here is how I would change the ranks:

Current ranks: New Ranks:

o Midshipman ---> Seaman
o Ensign ---> Able Seaman
o 2nd Lieutenant ---> Leading Seaman
o 1st Lieutenant ---> Petty Officer
o Lieutenant Commander ---> Warrant Officer
o Commander ---> Midshipman
o Captain ---> Ensign
o 2nd Rear Admiral ---> Lieutenant Jr grade
o 1st Rear Admiral ---> Lieutenant
o Vice Admiral ---> Lieutenant Commander
o Admiral ---> Commander
o Fleet Admiral ---> Captain
o Grand Admiral ---> Commodore
o Marshal ---> Admiral
o Chief Marshal ---> Admiral of the Fleet

I realize this is not the ranking system of the US Navy. That one cannot be used as it only has 11 ranks in the Commissioned Officer Rank Structure of the United States Navy.
Therefore an adjusted version of the ranking system, based on the US Navy ranking system could be obtained using enlisted rates as well:

Current ranks:

Ranks
o Midshipman ---> Seaman recruit.
o Ensign ---> Seaman
o 2nd Lieutenant ---> Petty Officer 2nd Class
o 1st Lieutenant ---> Petty Officer 1st Class
o Lieutenant Commander ---> Ensign
o Commander ---> Lieutenant Jr Grade
o Captain ---> Lieutenant
o 2nd Rear Admiral ---> Lieutenant Commander
o 1st Rear Admiral ---> Commander
o Vice Admiral ---> Captain
o Admiral ---> 2nd Rear Admiral
o Fleet Admiral ---> 1st Rear Admiral
o Grand Admiral ---> Vice Admiral
o Marshal ---> Admiral
o Chief Marshal ---> Fleet Admiral

Furthermore, this is a version modeled on the British Royal Navy:

Current ranks:

Ranks
o Midshipman ---> Seaman
o Ensign ---> Petty Officer
o 2nd Lieutenant ---> Warrant Officer
o 1st Lieutenant ---> Officer Cadet
o Lieutenant Commander ---> Midshipman
o Commander ---> Sub-Lieutenant
o Captain ---> Lieutenant
o 2nd Rear Admiral ---> Lieutenant-Commander
o 1st Rear Admiral ---> Commander
o Vice Admiral ---> Captain
o Admiral ---> Commodore
o Fleet Admiral ---> Rear Admiral
o Grand Admiral ---> Vice Admiral
o Marshal ---> Admiral
o Chief Marshal ---> Admiral of the Fleet

What do you say?

In what Navy would a seaman be given command of a ship?

If your going to come up with a new ranking system, then don't push up the current ranks to the other tiers; already been through 2nd Rear Admiral, don't want to have to go back to it. Come up with different names, then get back to us.

Granted.

But then I ask you: in what Navy would a Midshipman, Ensign, 2nd Lieutenant, Lieutenant Commander be given command of a ship?

And that's the current ranking system.

I appreciate your effort for coming up with a ranking system. It looks nice and modernized but I feel it's complicated and some ranks did not make sense. For me, the current chain of command makes sense and in some way and each rank makes me feel like that rank. Afterall DS takes place in a sci-fi universe so it is not required to use modern or old chain of commands. However, I still wish Commodore was part of our current ranks.

Maybe I'm just an olf oof and I've been used to the rank structure DS had used since forever.

At least midshipmen are officers of some form.

This isn't a disastrous idea, since "marshal" and "chief marshal" don't really fit with the other ranks in my opinion, but "seaman" and so forth don't really fit with ranks that command spacecraft, either. For one, it would probably be "spaceman."

Plus I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the idea of huge quantities of seamen flying all over the place.

I'll have a think about this one and see if I can come up with some suggestions along these lines.

my idea -

midshipman - probationer
ensign - trainee
2nd lieutenant - recruit
1st lieutenant - petty officer
commander - petty officer first class
captain - first officer
2nd rear admiral - tactical leader
1st rear admiral - chief tactical leader
vice admiral - rear squadron leader
admiral - squadron leader
fleet admiral - war commander
grand admiral - fleet commander
marshal - chancellor of the fleet
chief marshal - supreme chancellor of the fleet

took about 10 minutes to think out, so rorry if it looks very half-baked/roasted

Your completely right. Let me check my naval history a little more closely. Source please? That was probably meant to be done as a decoy anyway...
Come on, a flagship to an Ensign?

Cute. This way we would almost completely distance ourselves from real-world Navy ranking systems though...

And also, what's the point of using "supreme" in a rank if there would be 56 "supreme" chancellors? Not that supreme....

chancellors are for the civillians only.

In DS, all players belong to the military and a chancellor isn't a military officer....

A bunch of these sound more like command positions then officer grades.
