i Just went straight to posting here.....a seaman is like a private in the army. What private commands any men? an ensighn is much more belivable than a seaman, even up to PO. No enlisted ever commands any warships.

Granted.

But then I ask you: in what Navy would a Midshipman, Ensign, 2nd Lieutenant, Lieutenant Commander be given command of a ship?

And that's the current ranking system.

Swift Boat, anyone?

I believe those were commanded by low officers, and they are small ships as well

It amazes me people talk about 'commanding' a ship, given the general consensus is that people are 'piloting' a ship and are good 'pilots'.

That said, the current ranking system seems generally OK to me, although I would like Chief Marshal be replaced by Supreme Bardiche.

Yup, the "brown water navy". Some of those boats weren't even fully crewed by Navy men and had Army grunts manning the weapons.

PT boats were also generally commanded by a Lt. or Lt. JG.

If we are going on nautical terminology then ships don't have pilots, they have Helmsman which are given direction by a Commander but if we are going by aeronautical terminology then you would have a Pilot in Command or Aircraft Commander.

Either way someone if commanding the vessel.

The United Federation Of Planets does.

It goes like this, The are 10 grades for each rank so someone can be an Ensign Grade 5 and still be an A COMMANDER OF A STAR SHIP.

Ensign
Lieutenant
Lt.Commander
Commander
Captain
Rear Admiral Lower Half
Rear Admiral Upper half
Vice Admiral Lower Half
Vice Admiral Upper Half
Admiral (Only NPC's have this rank as far as I know.)

Also my idea for a ranking system.

Midshipman
Ensign
Ensign 1st Class
Lieutenant
Lt.Commander
Commander
Captain, Junior Grade
Captain, Senior Grade
Commodore
Rear Admiral
Vice Admiral
Admiral
Fleet Admiral
Grand Admiral of the Fleet

The Royal New Zealand Navy and Royal Australian Navy have Lieutenant Commanders as Captains on borad ships, the RNZAN has 6 ships that are commanded by Lieutenant Commanders and the RAn have twenty ships that are commanded by LC's

I like that ranking system, only problem is that first rank where you have only a extractor....
For new players just an extractor and no idea what to do might suck.

What'd also be nice is if we had a little icon indicating rank. my example - navyfield.
