Auroa had some nice models but he used Bender to make them, this left several artifacts that would not import cleanly into the game. We spent a lot of time cleaning up one of the models but were not able to finish all the updates needed to fully import the model.

Really like the corvette. Its so pointy and bad ass that I thought it wanted to be a pirate ship.

You could try importing the Blender models to FBX, then into 3DS Max.
Anyway, can I ask what's the max allowable map size for ships? 1024 x 1024?
I UV unwrapped the unimesh and found many small parts that's hell to detail when using 256x256 tiles, especially emblems, windows and stuff.
You shrink those tiles and the textures get all mushed up.
Sample of a rough texture jobs. I just added racing stripes and the windows for a test. 1024 x 1024 with 256x256 tiles are mushy up close.

It'd look better if there was a stripe on each side of the hull going over the wing instead of one down the middle, but other than that it's looking really good.

Here's the more or less completed model with textures. Bump mapped as well as lighted up.
I had to use a 2048x2048 map to retain sharpness of detail. :\

I guess its too late to get a Top, right, front pic of his models and re-create them in max?

I did get his ICC and UGTO dread model when he shared it. Blender format though.

No, I never thought of anything like that. I'm a fan of LoA's work too. He gave me lots of pointers.
I have a couple of his models in Blender format.

although the non-blocky design would normally make it seem like an ugto model, the fact that it's point SCREAMS ICC. i love this design
