The whole idea is not only do we switch out guns, but the ammunition too. This will allow for more personalised ships. Everyone wont just fell like every other person.
so, here guys some ideas...
Rail / Gauss guns
ASR-1028A Wasp
The standard ICC round for projectile weapons for centuries, proven in countless skirmishes across the empire.

TSSR-6546TSX Mosquito
Top secret ammunition used by ICC special forces, with deadly accuracy. Responsible for the death of many pirates and influential UGTO leaders.

HP-25 Bulldog
Recently cleared for military service, this round is often used by pirates and other trouble makers all over space. Well known for high damage.

This lot of gizmos and gadgets will get those hard hitting lead slugs into those pesky missiles and fighters faster! Note: May consume alot of energy..

This mutation adds a extra cortex to a k'luth ships brain, with the function of harnessing PSI energy.

I have to say I'm a bit disapointed, as I was certain someone was suggesting a complex economy/political system for DS based around the mining and supply of spice...Plus barren planets could get a big worm that leaps up and eats ships in orbit like the thing from star wars.
But ya, I miss customizing weapons. I know people abused it but I think ships were much more unique to their players back then. The abuse came from the levels of weapons being broken since scouts could put on dreadnought armor at one point. Get rid of that part and it was fine.

I really want there to be enough customization that it hits the point where people fear the pilot not the ship. People should say "oh @#@$ here comes Necro and his band of slightly unstable vagabonds." not "oh's no's here comes a krill, a siphon and a mandible with a hive way off in the distance."
you could make weapon gadgets spawn randomly from wreckage much like enhancements to give people with umpteen trillion prestige something to work for. you blow up the ship salvage whatever tech you can and use it to reverse engineer random new faction specific weapon systems. These would start out as just augmented versions of existing weapons and further down the line you could create entirely new weapons. these would fit into the existing categories, IE cannons beams core weaps missiles, and would only be available by random drop. you can uses the existing credit system to trade around for the weapons you like. you get a whole new level of reasons to play the game.

i agree with scorched. The game needs more ecomoy and depth to make it interesting.
EG: Could anyone imagine borderlands without the rediculous numbers of unique weapons?
