Built a new one late November:
i7 2700k
Asus P6Z68 Deluxe/Gen3 motherboard
Samsung F3 1TB HDD (it was cheap considering the highly inflated prices. When they finally drop again I'll upgrade, but for now this is fine)
Corsair HX 750 Professional 750 watt PSU
Cooler Master HAF X full tower
G.Skill Ripjaws X 8gb (2x4gb) DDR3 1600
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO heatsink
EVGA GTX 570 HD Video Card - 2560MB
Asus 24x DVD burner
Windows 7 Home Premium
I waited and waited and waited for the AMD bulldozers, and when they were finally released they were failures. They're not bad CPUs, they're just not good enough. This rig runs Battlefield 3 and Skyrim on max ultra settings no problem, and I even add ambient occlusion to Skyrim via Nvidia beta drivers. It's also future proof enough that I don't have to worry for a while. It's easy to overclock and runs cool. It's a Cadillac while my last computer was an old Ford Taurus.

you could also add another gtx 570 down the road if you need the extra power, not that you need that sort of firepower now unless you are driving dual displays

The option is there but I don't see myself using a dual display any time soon. I also haven't tried running Darkspace on this yet. I know some of my old games have serious problems under Windows 64 bit.
Question: If I got a second 570 with 2.5 gigs VRAM, would that be a total of 5.0 gigs VRAM? Does it work that way?

If it does, I really don't see the use of all the memory. My 1.5 gigs on my 460m never gets all the way used.

HD texture packs for Skyrim etc. can use a good amount. I don't expect to ever need more than 2.5 gigs though.

Yes, but each card requires 2.5 Gb of VRAM to do what it needs to do.
For example, if both cards render frames alternatively with max AA and all that jazz, then they each use their own 2.5 Gb of VRAM for the frame buffer and all the AA work.
One card cannot use more than what it has on itself. Trying to access the VRAM on the other card through the PCI bus and Northbridge would introduce unworkable latency - your framerate would bottom out.
I would also heavily discourage people getting cards with more than 2 Gb VRAM on it unless it's got a bus size larger than 256 bit (and that would mean 750 Mb, 1.5 Gb, 3 Gb VRAM sizes) due to bandwidth and latency accessing the VRAM.

or you want to run high definition/high resolution textures. 1 Gb is often not enough.
This one has a 320 bit bus.

Word. I've never once even so much as heard of a woman going all crazy over someone's computer, a badass car maybe, but not a computer.

A certain Mr Clarkson will also prove to you that women don't really care if you drive an exotic supercar either.
Your PC, your supercar, your superbike, and all your gadgets are boy's toys. Good for bragging rights to show all the other boys that you're a bigger man with a bigger penis. I mean, that's why we're rolling in the MV in our EADs n Siphons, powered by Intel Core i7s and GTX580s. So the n00b-toobs in their Core 2 Duo powered dessies and cruisers.... Well, they see us rollin', they hatin'...
It's all abt me with the bigger e-peen, using it to p-slap u in your v-face, yo!
Girls... Pfft. They don't care abt our macho chest thumping. They just wanna know how big your bank account is.
