Missiles can do FF damage. Mines do to, when you manually det them.
Friendly ships should be able to hit 'em too. That'll make the minelayer pilot watch where he drops his eggs....

And with the increased chances of FF, I'd go with FC's suggestion too. Make them do MORE damage. Right now, I've given up on mines cos they're just feel puny now compared to last time.

The weird thing about mines are that they're not persistent. They seem to disappear if you cross a jumpgate or get far away enough from them.

Mines will continue to suck unless their AOE is increased, which Ent pointed out would decimate smaller ships, they become homing which might not work correctly, OR they become invisible to everything but scanners and have a greatly increased lifespan. EDIT: invisible to the enemy except with scanner, but visible to you and your teammates, no scanner necessary.

I don't see any other way to improve them. They're too visible now and too easy to PD, which defeats their purpose.

I like the idea where they are invisible to the enemy unless he has a Scanner on. Also, FF on mode for mines pls.

Just need them to do more damage and AOE. As for longevity, I guess ppl can adapt since they're already used to that.

Really i could see mines being an engineering ships kinda of wep for the soul reason that actual mines are used for two reasons
1. in defense of a designated area or zone
[i.e.]: to place mines you must target a planet then maintain a set range like in bombing

2. to make a strategic location dangerous or unuseable for/by enemies
[i.e.] to place mines in open space you must place a analog for a planet such as a transmitter that would be the "brain" or even a kamikazee drone that would herd the mines so to speak

i remeber playing scarab when there was a pres limit. Aah the amount of times i heard

"why are u even still trying?"

followed up shortly afterwards by

"can u please give me a brake man"

mines got reduced by 2 phases. first they got upped by not damaging friendlies. some point later ppl decided mines where to strong, especially since they dont damage friendlies...even more important, the dmg output was out of proportion for a cruiser. so dmg got reduced.

any ship requires skill first to become usefull. this is more so with minelayers. also u gotta take some hits flying in front of ur enemy to lay those mines in its face. 1 less frontal armor can balance mine damage in my opinion...or 2 beams less.

i dont think mines should be scanner visible only. lotsa getting killed by ?! in the future i predict. in combat, if i lay mines and instead of shooting me, the enemy pd my heapload of mines, i dont see that as a bother...

a little more range on the damage. like 150 gu=20%dmg, 100gu=35%, 50gu=60%, 25gu=95%, would be a good start. i'd be happy to test this in beta when i got 2 other testees.
