I'm just... I don't know what to think... I thought this would be a remarkably simple and helpful thing to add to the game...

Can't you just add TWO new key map definitions for instant ruddering?

It wont resolve the need for a 3rd hand playing ICC, though. (If only there was a way to make middle mouse+WASD redirect shields, maybe?)

When playing ICC, I actually map my shields this way:

Front: 6
Left: 7
Right: 8
Aft: 9

I reserve 1-5 for weapon grouping and typically will also number armor arcs with 6-9, respectively.

When playing UGTO or K'luth, I mark my armor as:

Front: 7
Left: 8
Right: 9
Aft: Blank - The other three are numbered; process of elimination.

This leaves 1-6 for weapon grouping.

All utilities such as faction specials (ie, cloak, pulse, etc), bombs, EWAR, fighters, are preset with letter denominations, so no worries there.

I number my armor arcs with the keys farthest from where my left hand so I can look and see exactly what % they are at, and whether or not an arc can help me absorb that one shot, or whatever.

I've never had shortages of hands.

I use WASD for movement, I point jump, etc. My hands never move from their positions unless I'm dead panning with /y or screaming bloody murder at whomever is blind firing my poor cloaked behind.

using rudders and numpad:

rudders dont start turning until you release the key. however, you can tap the direction you want to go, thereby commencing a turn, and then hold to increase the angle of that turn.

since you can set a turn rate and maintain it, you can, with practice, learn the minimum turn rate and speed necessary to evade enemy weapons fire. this is INSANELY useful information, as it gives you more precise control over your ship through the battle. you can evade fire from multiple ships from multiple vectors with barely any effort.

i have not encountered a situation where my survival depended on making my hard turn any faster. the only time this might be useful is plotting an escape jump, in which case the ship automatically banks hard to jump anyways.

using rudder controls also automatically frees up your right hand to manage shields. its also relatively easy to issue any other commands from this position, e.g. jumping, detonating salvos, etc.

This is turning into a topic i started 4 years ago..
So let me give you the topic so you all can read up about it. linky.
As you see a lot of people fly different. i myself prefere QWASD just quick tab them to turn, not hold them in.
Main reason i like those is that you can stop touching A or D and use your hand to push other buttons. With the arrow keys you have to keep pressing them in order to keep turning. this is the main and only reasons i dislike the arrow keys.
Disabling Yaw control works wonders once you get access to dread or station and like to work tactically (e.g. long range fire). Just set the direction you want to go the ship will turn until it is facing that direction, leaving you to do other things.

Ok back to the origional topic. we could see about adding more functionality and customarization to the current key mapping. but as backslash said it will be a while before we have anyone actually working on it..

fatties idea, + shields get boosted to armor level HP. (since rotating requires energy)

Then ICC gets a +... what is it now 22% to armor and shield HP since defense mode no longer works.

I use this...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nostromo_SpeedPad_n52

WASD is on the keypad, I bind the arrow pad to the D-pad thumb controller. That big orange button is for ALPHAaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!

Since there're 3 profiles, Reg, Green and Blue, I put Red for FPS games like Battlefield, HL, etc. Green for some other purposes.

Blue is for DS.

On my right, just next to the mouse pad is this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logitech_G13

Normally, this baby is on the left depending on the type of games. But for DS, I keep it on the right for the extra keysets that I might need.... like, weapons group 1 through 6. E-jump, F2 through F-whatever. Just take my hands off the mouse for a moment to add the appropriate input. Some of the keys will duplicate the ones on my N52, but it's all good. Redundancy is always a good thing.

There ya have it, my regular captain's chair consoles.

So I don't need any remap of keys, or QQ to the devs for remapping. Just spend a bit of cash to solve your own problems.

I only need 2 hands to fly ICC ships because of this.

1 = Armor/shield status
2 = WEAPONS/AMMO INDICATOR
3 = RUDDER
4 = CHAT
5 = ENERGY MANAGEMENT PANEL
6 = targetting and weapons fire

very effective, only need 3 assistants
