Would it be too difficult to code in a slider for the video settings that would allow you to adjust the number of shield and armor rings shown around ships?

If someone turned it way up, normal ships would have the rings of an elite, giving a much easier to read damage status (especially when zoomed out on a small ship, it's hard to tell.)
And the elites... oh lord, they would have so many rings XD

If someone turned it all the way down, all ships would only have one or two rings (meaning less clutter, if so desired)

I don't know how you have the armor and shield rings scripted, if it could be easily scaled by a client-side video setting or not.

SHIELD_ARMOR_LAYER=50000.000000
That is a constant.
It can't be made to be adjustable in the config file or something?

Drat!

Then it wouldn't be a constant.

ah, the programer in me is smiling

q: "is it a constant or a variable?"
a: "yes."

i guess the problem would be the fact, that the number of lines represent the armor/shield-status

guess what'll happen, when you set the number high for your scout (default 1 line per arc) to show ...maybe... 20
and a station show up (default 20 lines per arc or so)... having 400 lines now

and now think in stationspace-dimension when not a single station join, but 10 that would be 4.000 lines, only for those stations (per arc)
a huge wall of lines

would you switch to options every time a station join / leave a fight to re-adjust that slider ?

Thanks NoBoDx, that is something to consider, it did come to mind.

However, what might be better then to alleviate that is having a non linear calculation, so then a station or dread might just have twice as many or 50% more rings than the smaller ships.

But, I don't recall there being too much of a disparity between small and large ships as far as shields and armor health goes. Scouts got 2 shield rings, stations got 5 shield rings. (If I recall correctly)

Yeah, I don't get how a constant can't be replaced with a modifier read in the .config

I was simply pointing to the fact it's called constants.ini for a reason, not debating whether the data type could be set to non-constant.

The long winded answer, as Nobodx pointed out, is that it would display too fiew/many on some selected ships. Right now, it's fine as is, and there's no reason to change it.

It's really hard to see the shield and armor status clearly on anything smaller than a dreadnought, and the gadget icons are unintuitive when it comes to orienting which one is for a certain armor arc. Kinda hard to remember which one is which when you're in the heat of battle, and a slip up can screw you over.

Could always look at the number % on the ships info or change your screen res/brightness so the lines are visable to you, was playing a few moments ago using a 32in TV and had no problems seeing armor/shield rings on scouts

support for custom HUD's perhaps?

I would really like to change the layout to something more intuitive.

Yeah, not worth the effort -facedesk-

You seem to think we have a massive team of developers who have nothing to do but sit down and work on DarkSpace 24/7.

The reality is that there are only 3 people who can code on the development team who are active.

Faustus, myself, and Fattierob.

Out of those three, guess which of us works on DarkSpace full time?

None.

We work on this game when we have time to, and not at the whim of a player or their wildest suggestions.

I'm sure we'd love to re-do the UI at some point, but there are FAR more important things on the book.
