psi already seems to come in slow motion. Go ahead and use plasma. Im sure that will be really fun to dodge

I meant fitting Plasmas on Krills to be used as Station hunters. You can keep a good distance of 500 gus from stations and do some good distance damage with SIs and Plasmas out of range from the station's beams.

yeah, just like to say here,
as a person who pilots icc cruisers alot plasma is very easy to evade, PSI is a bit harder.

use plasma if you want to attack a large target from a safe range
use psi if you want to get right up close and personal, or to have a better chance at hitting a smaller target with a lesser damage output.
At what range does the damage of PSI exceed plasma?

looking at chloro's calculations psi damage = plasma damage somewhere around 330-350 gu
thats 1.5 seconds of flight time for psi shots, and 2.1 seconds for plasma shots

And 0.6 secs against a station is gonna make what difference again?

none at all, just telling when psi damage = plasma damage to fluttershy
below 350 gu, psi more damage
above 350 gu, plasma more damage
further, dps comparisons make me wonder if plasma dps = psi dps @ ~200 gu...plasma is amazing
think it has hull damage bonus too...omg

Assuming L is the distance where 5 PSI = 3 Plasma.
We have:
1 PSI = 319+(54)+{144+(20)}-L*[67+(99)]/660
1 Plasma = 409+(33)+{319+(19)}-L*[81+(4)]/640
Then 5 PSI = 3 Plasma
5*(319+(54)+{144+(20)}-L*[67+(99)]/660) = 3*(409+(33)+{319+(19)}-L*[81+(4)]/640)
368+(171)-L*[67+(99)]/132 = {237-(43)}-3L*[81+(4)]/640
=> L = (368+(171)-{237-(43)})/([67+(99)]/132-3*[81+(4)]/640)
Coefficient: Scout = 2; Frigate = 3; Destroyer = 4; Cruiser = 5; Dread = 6; SDread = 7; Station = 10
Then
- Lmin(scout) = (368+171*2-(237-43*2))/((67+99*2)/132-3*(81+4*2)/640) = ~352gu
- Lmax(frigate) = (368+171*3)/((67+99*3)/132-3*(81+4*3)/640) = ~380gu
- Lmin(destroyer) = ~324gu
- Lmax(cruiser) = ~324gu
- Lmin(dreadnaught) = ~314gu
- Lmax(hive) = ~ 280gu
IN A VOLLEY, > 400gu from the target, Plasma does more damage. < 300gu from the target, PSI does more damage.

PSI cooldown: .232 + (.049), charge rate: 0.14
Plasma cooldown: .256 + (.02), charge rate: 0,18
Cooldown comparison:
- Scout: PSI = (0.232+0.049*2) = 2.36s; Plasma = (0.256+0.02*2)/0.18 = 1.64s; PSI/Plasma = 1.44. 3 volley Plasma ~ 2 volley PSI.
- Frigate: PSI/Plasma = 2.05
- Destroyer: PSI/Plasma = 2.3
- Cruiser: PSI/Plasma = 2.54
- Dread: PSI/Plasma = 2.76
- Hive: PSI/Plasma = 3.69
Clearly, Plasma's DPS is more than twice as PSI's.

As per usual when people pull out raw DPS calculations, people forget many crucial variables.
The major one being that you can have the biggest gun in the universe but your DPS will be zero if you can't hit the target.

do you accept "plasma looks cooler *ahem hotter* than psi" as an valid argument ?

Doran must be shocked, again.

Bear in mind you should only use Plasma if you don't intend on trying to hit anything smaller than a Dreadnaught. Against cruisers you might want to stick to PSI, as your chance to actually hit is more important than overall potential DPS. |

Really? you mean there are situations in which one weapon ISNT the best all the time? I am shocked, SHOCKED, that a fine upstanding citizen such as Enterprise would DARE suggest that the ability to do the most amount of damage in the shortest amount of time, over time, is somehow any degree LESS important than being able to do any damage at all. |
|
Theoretical DPS of a weapon is developer job.
Player's job is to make theory into reality.

I believe PSI speed is 220gu/s. Particle speed is 185gu/s. Railgun speed is 175gu/s. And you think 220gu/s is slow motion?
But... but... I have the same feeling like you, Defiance. Ion Cannon speed is 215gu/s, slower than PSI but I feel it's much faster than PSI because I hardly dodge IC whilst I easily dodge PSI at the same range. Or perhaps my information is wrong.
