Flux does system damage, think of it like an EMP beam.

Flux beam, like the flux wave, totally sucks against anything but hull where it's meant to do lots of damage and some system damage. It also has no falloff.

Love it when I get useful tidbits from the devs, good to know!

Something has to do damage to have falloff, far as I can tell pulse beams do no damage. Or at least if they do it's so minimal I can't even tell.

Pretty sure pulse beam has a falloff but if you're using it against things that aren't missiles and fighters you shouldn't really be expecting to do anything significant anyway.

pulse beams do such low damage that this is the case

Flux Beam..
And the Pulse beam. lets take a closer look at them..

I will compar them against the standard CL. Random damage is taken at 50% for comparison.

Standard CL
Energy; 0.71 units
Falloff; yes (falloff equal to direct damage)
Damage Type; Energy
Duration; 4 sec
Recharge; 4.4 sec
Max lenght; 165 Gu

At maximum range the falloff of the device equals the direct damage, this means only the Random damage is applied. and the random damage can maximumly be 40% of the maximum direct damage.

Flux Beam
Energy; 0.888
Falloff; NONE
Damage Type; Energy & EMP
Duration; 4 sec
Recharge; 4.9
Max lenght; 150 Gu

No falloff means always do the same damage, the maximum random damage is 20% lower then the direct damage. and over all the Flux beam is just a little less powerfull as the CL at point blank range (0gu). A standard CL at 150 Gu is at about 25% the strenght of what a Flux Beam should do, due to no falloff. And the Damage Type includes EMP this makes it especially efficient of dealing EMP damage to your target knocking systems out. Therefor On a unprotected arc the Flux Beam can really deal a lot of damage and inflict additional system damage to boot.

Pulse beam
Energy; 0.28
Falloff; yes (30% fall of of then the direct damage)
Damage Type; Energy
Duration; 0.5 sec
Max lenght; 130 + (level*8) Gu

The pulse beam, able to fire 3 times for almost the same energy required of the CL and Fluxb. At point blank range, it gives about 50% damage compaired to the CL. Able to fire once every second. that would make it do more over time compared to a Standard CL IF energy wasn't issue, the Standard CL however is more energy efficient then the Pulse beam if we look at energy efficiency. Not to mention having to press the fire button every second (not a issue for Spacebar smashers).
Again to remind people, the Pulse beam is/was designed to be used as a Fast Point Defence system. And still is best to be used for point defense only.

That is it.
If you have any additional questions I will see them appear in here.

Good luck out there,
Eledore Massis
