Alliances are always temporary and borne out of convenience. Once the common enemy is defeated, you will usually see the alliance collapse and the allies turn on each other at the earliest opportunity.

It has happened time and again. And it will continue to happen.

Eg: ICC and Kluth team up to push UGTO out of a system. Once that goal is accomplished, Kluth turns on ICC and they end up fighting each other while UGTO recovers and reorganize themselves.

It happens ALL of the time.

One of the better perks of a tri-faction system. No one side dominates for 94e982348385030 years.

alliences are born from the need to keep balance when one of two sides have the lack to win both join for the commion cause like in 483 kluth owend from delta all the way to sol it took icc and ugto togeter almost 2 and a half weeks just to push them back.
in 1.5 it took ugto and kluth to break the stalemat of lutyen star that icc held for 4 weeks most of the time its kluth and icc vs ugto at times because their is enough to of them to shoot most of the time.
the point is alliences have been at the core of this game for years it is a stragey to be used and the longest ones to last is uselly is a few weeks to a few minutes

I'd like to see what can happen if there not were differences in the capabilities of the factions.
What if everyone had the same weapons and defenses?

It would be interesting to watch

It would also get boring as hell very very quickly.

Enterprise nails it:

From any particular view, total control would be the outcome. "Push them back" sounds great. But what if you view the planets as occupied by enemy forces. Do you stop and let Earth go to the Ugto? Perhaps you feel that you must work with Uggies to stop the Kluth from gaining any ground, after all, human-human fighting is one thing...bugs..another.

From the bug point of view-These humans hate each other anyway and you need to save your species. Why not pit human against human, exactly as you found them.

UGTO view- We are the center of authority and those rogues out there will bow to the free market forces that have every right to make profit through the universe. Leave any part of that sector uncleaned and resistance will rise again. You've heard that the Alien species is having problems with your rebels. You'll agree to work with them to stop these raids.

In the old days we used to log in and have NO planets. Of course it sucked. What lessons do we learn from it?
1. Make sure you have a couple of ships with lots of inf, prefer a tranny already loaded.
2. Find the best first planets to capture and start reclaiming your space before the horde returns.
3. Plot doing the exact same thing to them.

This was the emphasis of the game. There was nothing better than forcing a reset!

ICC WINS!
UGTO WINS!
I don't know if Kluth forced a reset as often, but KLUTH WINS!

Now, the game has been reduced to short visions. Lots of fun players are in the MV, but they aren't applying big picture tactics to drive a RESET

Its not a gameplay issue that you get pushed back to spawn galaxies. This is supposed to happen should you not be able to defend your systems.

Ent said it best:"Infact, the true end goal of the MV right now is capturing everything."

Lead developer Faustus says: "we've been very careful about what abilities we give ships, so as to make sure players work together to achieve their goals."

Part 2:
The realistic tactics behind alliances are ancient.
Master Sun Tzu often encouraged his King to undermine alliances before they grew. Thus the inverse is correct for toppling larger powers. Want to topple a greater force, better learn some diplomacy.

Alliances are often the root of larger victories.
The battle of Yorktown and other famous battles would not be the same without an alliance force in the area, in that case the French.

The alliances between Russia and China wasn't very strong but it was necessary to stop the Japanese. Russia stopped Japan in Manchuria in the summer of 45.

There are too many to count.

Learning to use the tactic of alliances is important. Learning to put up with an alliance is perhaps more valuable.

Good luck in the MV!
