draw in people to the game. Specifically we need some ads that focus on just how amazing some game experiences can be, with dramatic shots
- a scout ship flying under a station
- two opposing fleets meeting eachother with a view on the center line (one of my best memories is from the version back when that crazy huge system with the umbrella cluster in it was around; two massive fleets faced off and went at eachother on sublight because of all the dictor fields - first volley was of missiles, second volley of cannons, third volley was torpedoes, then we hit laser range... just so awesome to see all that firepower streaking across space at one another one stage at a time)
- a dread with a fleet of smaller escorts flying in formation

yknow, cool looking stuff

GCQL and a tutorial:
- GCQL is just not that user friendly to a newbie just hitting it, it's too busy and they don't know what they're looking at. the main system doesn't need to be scrapped, but the first screen that should open when you start GCQL for the first time should be a screen with a big tutorial button on it and nothing else. Hell, give a reward like an exclusive starting ship to new players/special unlock to a ship that wouldnt otherwise be in their rank or whatever, just as incentive for them to click it (also good for advertising, woooo)
- after completing the tutorial, they should get a prompt to exit, which will take them to a screen with optional links to more indepth game guides, or a "continue to lobby" button that takes them to the english chat room
- i look up and see a tab labeled launch and one labeled servers; if im a newbie i have no idea which one does what; launch doesnt even make sense, servers is where i traditionally join a game. the chat tab is probably lowest on my priority list because i have no idea that the lobby here is actually enjoyable sometimes, yet its also listed first. the browser tab doesnt make a lot of sense either - did i just download firefox: darkspace? why should i even care?
- underneath that i have home, news, forum, downloads, profile - do i need to make a custom profile like an rpg game? should i click that? what kinds of things can i download? do i need to download anything? forum is just if i have trouble with something right? why does the forum and browser tab effectively bring me to the same place?

people are ADD nowadays, you need to take them by the hand and lead their stupid face through the system otherwise you will lose all but the people determined to get something out of a download.

its also their first impression, and first impressions of a game nowadays are what make a lot of people stick around or leave. relying on random players who may or may not be here to help them is foolish and probably doesnt jive with their experience of other MMOs, relying on forum posts that they probably will not read is foolish as well.

also to say, there's just a problem of exponential growth: new players want to join a game thats vibrant and alive, we dont really have that right now. you need to create a lot of buzz and a big draw and get a ton of newbies at once. this also means that our current player base just wont be up to the task of helping everyone and youll eventually lose people in the mix.

the learning curve just to get into the game is way, way too steep. the learning curve to get a handle on the gameplay is probably too steep too.

make a streamlined download > install > tutorial > tour of GCQL > server list experience and then back it up with a bunch of slick ads and the game will be critiqued on its actual merits rather than the impediments people see just getting to the point of even being able to see those merits in the first place.

the biggest thing too would be the audience to talk to. Honestly for me the draw to this game is space combat, and not having to pay, what the $15 a month for EVE. This is a great game and i'm incredibly happy it's stayed alive for all these years.

Get this game on lists that show "Free Online Massive Multiplayer games" A lot of my friends browse those things for new games to play.

Also maybe try what League of Legends does, and offer a credit bonus for refering new players to the game. (double check ip so that it's not the same as the account to be creddited which would help against people making multiple accounts for the credits, and then ban people who find ways to do it anyway)

Just some ideas

2) Active Staff/Developers
3) Active Advertisements

More players for sure. Seems like the only way to even find out about Darkspace is a random search for MMORPG and finding it on some ancient wiki listing. I've definitely been waiting for the server to get a little bit more active so I can have some fun with more videos. Got me a new system to run the recorder on hopefully things will be way smoother.

First off ill say Yes DS got Boreing to the point i deleted it off my computer. This is why.
1) To much delay between command and action i started running into the problem where id jump away and then id still die.
2) Logging on and seeing nobody online
3) It just got boring
Altho i do agree with Fattie on the subject of Yes haveing more Active staff and i have already suggested outing all inactive staff and replaceing them with new Active staff (As far as Mod's) Developers i understand are hard to find atm.
Yes Darkspace has an Advertising problem and a Funding problem. Yes I still belive in Haveing a more of an in game economic system. Bring in Mineing and Different Resource's and not only that but altho i hate this but it works as far as to keep players playing but if you should choose to impliment resource Gathering Make it so that certain ship's need certain resources to build. Yes i did leave DS for BSGO and perhaps you should look at how you have to Obtain ships in that game and maby implament something similar.
In BSGO I really wanted a certain ship and to Obtaining that ship it required in game currency but i did not want to spend real money so i had to Mine and sell a specific resource that only gives you in game currency. 3 months later BAM!! i got the ship i wanted. But hopefully you get the idea If ya dont buy the ship with money you gotta work for it thus you must play the game and depending on how fast/badly you want it you will play frequently.
Though your right BSGO Does get a little more advertising....and i also found a similarity DS and BSGO some times have a problem with Keeping some players intrested. Like iv seen here iv seen there Noobs get disintrested and my theroy is this...
1) Lack of good story line (This should be availible to watch from the main screen at any time) Its much better and faster to watch then to practice the art of reading. Also BSGO Only has a Begining after a certain point theres just no more story wich sucks. At least in DS there is a bit more of a story Now to find someone to make a video.
2) Always starting off in Little ships. Now im not saying to give them a bigger ship Just give them a starting ship that ony a certain rank can use and give it more health(Not just 1 cannon pop he goes) Kinda thing More like Little guy can take a few hits before he goes POP! just enough to give em time to find which button to make his ship go some where away from the guy shooting him.
Although my Thoughts and ect. Does not Matter to you i thought perhaps some one who's thoughts does matter to you would steal some of my thoughts and perhaps some of my words will have Meaning. Sorry for my Bad English,spelling Error's ect. Have a nice day-Ray
