A few weeks ago I cleaned out my computer. Unknowingly, I took off the heatsink and cleaned it off before sticking it back on to the CPU without new thermal paste. After turning my computer back on and updating MOBO/GPU drivers I noticed extremely high temps from my CPU, ~190-200 F. It started crashing shortly after noticing the high temps. After consulting a few helpful lobby folk about the problem I ordered new Thermal Paste and applied it. While temps have lowered, they are still high, ~140 F idling right now. Even just opening Google Chrome sends them to ~160 F.
Any idea as to why the temps are still so high? I have to tread pretty lightly because the temps are extremely touchy right now sadly. :'(

MSI P67A-G64 LGA 1155
i5-2500k Sandy Bridge 3.3 GHz
2x GTX 560 SLI
Rosewill Bronze 1000W PSU

Youtube search how to apply thermal paste and read the instructions to make sure you've done it correctly.
Also make sure the fan is connected to the right power and sensor connector (should read CPU in tiny letters next to the socket on the motherboard).

Before applying I searched on Youtube, I am confident I managed it correctly. I put a pea sized dot in the middle of the CPU and then put the heatsink on.
The CPU fan is plugged in to the correct port as well, labeled CPUFAN.
Edit: Re-applied Thermal Paste and had idle temps of ~120 F last night. This morning temps are idle at ~110 F. Ambient temp. is quite a bit lower than it was last night.
Games still cause it to go extremely high, Starcraft 2 and Guild Wars 2 bring temps up to ~200F and Darkspace is ~150 F

Try reseating your HSF on the CPU again.
You might not have mounted if properly, possibly leaving an air gap somewhere.

i had a burning cpu problem once.
I cleaned of the cooling paste and redid it (even tho it didnt look like it needed doing that) and i blew the dust out of the heatsink

Mine is over clocked and the entire case, fans, and heat sinks are all full of tar from cigs and dog hair. The cores run between 110F and 130F.

I've reseated it multiple times and am pretty confident that it is seated correctly. The heatsink also has very minimal amounts of dust on it currently, no more than usual.

does it instantly spike up to that temperature as soon as you turn on the computer? If so, it almost has to be the contact between your CPU and heatsink. If it gradually climbs while under load to those temps it's probably the dust or something related to the fan on your heatsink or something.

The LGA 1155 socket type your motherboard is a pain in the ass to get the heatsink to be seated properly. Doubly make sure you installed the heatsink correctly. I've had tons of issues with those blasted things because it SEEMS like the heatsink is placed correctly but it's really not tight all the way. That seems like the problem you're having: your temperatures are high because their's a small gap somewhere.
