while units were, at one point, in KM, and you can still find old screenshots of such, trying to convert GU to KM (especially real KM, as opposed to a scaled KM) and expect it to make any kind of sense, well.. thats just not going to work

its more important that it works within the context of the game (ships being of a consistant size in relation to each other) than having any sort of analogous real-world compatable scale counterpart.
on that note, ships do have dimensions in meters, but to try and match that with say, planet sizes/distances is again, folly. those are the way they are, purely for the sake of gameplay, thats why planets arent simply large background art like (just to toss some beans out there) black prophecy, thats why you can travel nigh-seamlessly from planet to planet without having maps be instanced and seeing any sort of load/transition screen between them.

It is unbelievable and shows that the scale is incorrect. However this is just a simulation of space and we love it so we forgive such 'artistic license' : )

We all knew this anyway as we all fly on a 2D plane and know that planets move along slightly elliptical orbits, oh and in the solar system Neptune's solar orbit crosses with that of Pluto so at certain times of year Neptune is the furthest planet out. That is not the case with the 'Sol' system map however.

Also, there is no air in space so there should be no sound effects except internal ship noise... er in fact what am I saying...

pew pew, whoosh, bang, navigation, collision alert! Collision alert! Ah man I love that one...

Laters! : )

Also. Pluto is no longer a planet!

That makes the reason why things aren't to scale make a lot more sense. The amount of resources needed to run DS on true scale would be.. nightmarish.

I still do think planets in general could use being a little bit bigger and a little farther apart.

Large planets cause some very significant issues with the camera and surface targeting.
Try bombing infantry on the north pole of Eternity, if your cam is close enough to see the tan target diamonds, it's too close to look UP and select the bottom of the infantry stack.
