Hello guys. I am a DarkSpace veteran that used to play this game ever since I was a kid. I am still surprised this game still lives and exists. I see it does have some issues with server upkeep and population so my question is.

Why not putting on Steam Free To play. I bet it would gain popularity, it does not have any PAY TO WIN subscription features and it could easily overhelm other games. I am sure more people would play it, and some would decide to support the community.

They tried and were turned down.
Apparently GCQ is a "competitor" to Steam, not to mention this would be a large amount of work that might not even pay off, and if I recall correctly it would jeopardize Pantheons programming job or something, I can't remember.

Nothing to do with me, sadly! They just won't allow GCQL as it currently stands, and they'd take a % of the profits in the region of 30%~ from what I hear.

Something's wrong if they said no because of GCQL, there's other games that launch their own launcher instead of the game itself directly. I played Defiance for a while and if you launch it from steam it loads up glyph then you have to launch the game from that.

But yeah, steam does take a chunk of whatever money goes through them. A lot of MMOs use it though, it's easier for people without a CC to get a steam giftcard then use steam wallet funds to buy game currency.

I don't understand the GCQL thing, either!
I see other Steam games use launchers, sometimes for multiple games, and some aren't even properly integrated with Steam, so wtf, I just don't get it.

And yeah, they get a chunk, but you also get recognition.

Honestly, I think it would be best to work on a Dark Space 2 using a different engine, maybe there's something out there that lends itself to making MMO development a bit easier. Trust me, I understand that it is no easy task, there's little incentive for it to be done, and you guys have busy lives, so, I guess I can only dream, right?

It's because GCQL is a launcher that supports any number of games under the Medusa engine. They don't allow that. There's no games on Steam that have one launcher that can support other games.

1) Not worth the time put in to remove what they don't like.
2) Money reduction not worth it.
3) Games not in a state we'd be happy putting on to Steam.

Profits, what profits? Server upkeep seems to cost more than DS makes.
(Or is server upkeep a lie and you're purposely over-estimating the server cost?)

No worries there then.

Not to be a stickler, but I'm pretty sure Rift has a launcher that can switch to other games

I understand the other reasons, but as Crim said, Rift has its own launcher which include other games, like Defiance, ArcheAge, and Trove, all of these bundled on a launcher called "Glyph"
No idea why Steam is ok with this.

I do agree that DS isn't really in a good state to be put on steam, though. The game has a lot of small issues and shortcomings that will frustrate new players and lead to bad reviews.

Stranger still is Steam has Defiance and Rift VIA Glyph.. but you cannot play ArcheAge or Trove through Steam.. you must play them from the Glyph launcher alone as they are not Steam supported. -Shrugs-

Archeage was on steam for a while but it got taken off, never cared to check why since it's not that great anyway.

Off topic but.. AA was never actually released on Steam they sold founders packs but soon took the option away (presumably so they did not have to fork a % of the profits to Steam) and when the Beta came out everyone like myself who purchased stuff VIA Steam got compensated through Glyph and in game.
