I think everyone's—those who express it I mean—affinity for GTN was due to how much of a staple it was for DS. GTN took itself quite seriously, but not so serious enough that you couldn't have a great time playing, and even just camping the lobby.
This technical approach to the gameplay, and irreverent chatting atmosphere is to me, and I think many others as well, the reason for GTN's popularity among the player base, and the reason we attracted so many excellent players. This does not mean, and I'm not even remotely insinuating, that other fleets didn't have their fair share of awesome players in their ranks, they absolutely did. And we had some genuinely glorious battles. I remember once in fact, we were bypassing the gates and long jumping a direct route into the heart of enemy space for a sneak attack. We had several supply ships in the fleet carrying more than enough supplies to get us there, and even back if we were so inclined. We also had a couple of pilots flying interdictors. One of these had his interdictor running while we were in FTL. An enemy fleet was actually pulling the same stunt going the other way and as we were in FTL, we saw the entire enemy fleet get knocked out of FTL because of our interdictor in the middle of absolute nowhere. We just happened to pass that close to each other long jumping.
I have plenty of stories of great battles and hilarious fleet comms. And honestly, I miss those days very much.
