Historically, Grand Admiral, and Fleet Admiral are the same rank.
Just different cultural background to each one. Fleet Admiral is modern, and I believe comes out of the British Navy. I know that the German Navy in WWI and WWII used Grand Admiral instead of Fleet Admiral, but they are the same rank.

FYI... Me and Gideon just had a discussion, and a better ideal was brought to my attention...
Basically, we're adding another 2 new stats, "Influence" and "Command"...
"Command" is incremented, each time you create a mission, each command point decreases your prestige ... in other words you spend your prestige when you create missions.
"Influence" is is incremented when a mission you created is "Completed" successfully, "Influence" will be ranked seperately from your Military rank, in other words the player with the highest "Influence" will be "Emperor". Other ranks will include High Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, Senator, etc..
We are considering pulling out the new Military ranks, we may leave Grand Admiral and may still add Commodore between Captain and Rear Admiral.

So, if you send out a distress or supply call and someone ctrl-o's to pick it up, they get the mission, but will you still lose a dab of pres?

@Hawk... "General" is an Army rank. DarkSpace uses the naval rank systems, ie "Ensign" instead of "Private", "Admiral" instead of "General".
So, "General" is actually already heavily installed in the game, only it uses its navy alternative "Admiral" and "Fleet Admiral" rather than "General" and "General of the Army".

FYI, there will be separate Influence rank lists for each faction.
Basically, you exercise command to create missions for other players. The imporance of the goal will determine how many influence points the mission creator gets if the mission is succesfully completed.
There are a few other interesting factors involved as well.

Err... I think that having the double-prestige-per-rank will lead to ranks that are pretty much "pie in the sky" for most people, as they will never achieve them with the amount of time they can play the game.
Other than that, my rank suggetestions:
Above admiral, below FA:
Division Admiral
Above FA:
Fleetgroup Admiral/Sector Admiral/Battlegroup Admiral (whichever denotes the leader of several FA-led fleets.
