It's supposed to follow the original as closely as possible, but without the overlapping mesh errors. The mesh, or model, is the same. Just optimized.
If you take a closer look, you'll see that the textures are different.

Id say you rework a bit the mandi becouse ppl are expecting a big change and as you can see kluth already lost a lot of players so please change a bit more the dread,

The thing is... most of the old DS ships will remain. The M400, the Mandi, the standard UGTO dread, just being a few examples. The M300 and Agincourt are up next. And if we can find the Krill/Brood model, that'll be in the pipeline too.
Then we'll move on to the cruisers and stations, before dessies, frigs and corvettes/scouts. It'll take time.
There are new models to complement the existing ones. But many of the existing models will have to be redone or reworked to correct any existing mesh errors as well as to make them look sharper next to the newer UV mapped models.
I know everyone wants new stuff. But it's important to update most or some of the old stuff too. To me, the old stuff's like the soul of DS. It's where the game came from and we don't wanna leave it behind.

There's really not much point in adding a few new ships if the old ones aren't going to be brought up to the same standards. Kenny has the right idea, overhaul what's already here while adding some new stuff at the same time. We don't need to have all the existing models replaced since most of them look perfectly fine, they just need some touch up work to get rid of mesh/texture errors, like holes that go completely through a ship.
Though being on the subject, maybe you could do something about oversights like having the rear fin on ICC Cruisers directly in line with the center engine?
