Dear Development Team:

Questions concerning Platforms:

Will platforms, when implemented, by regulated simply to the orbit of a planet, or will the ability to build them at any point in space be an option?

If they are going to be limited to orbit, let me pose the following argument for being able to build them virtually anywhere:

Defense platforms could be built in the vicinity of existing Jump Gates as automated defense and early warning. Though I am uncertain how strong these platforms are, I am confident that they will not be strong enough to deter most players, but would compliment a small defense force nicely. Of course, for K’luth, an Anti-sensor platform near a defending gate would come in handy as would a Sensor Platform for those holding back the stem of alien aggression (much as the Northern States hold back the hordes of ravenous Canadians)

For Supply Platforms, I envision them being built deep in space, perhaps between systems not generally connected by Gate. These could serve as secret gathering points and jump off points for invasion. Of course, if the enemy is able to track down the location of one of these Platforms, it would easily be destroyed.

All of this argument is moot, of course, if they can be built anywhere

Future Platforms

Ship Yards Use your imagination…

Jump Gates

As Arch suggested in several posts, in homage to Barth no doubt, player created and destroyed Jump Gates would also be strategically beneficial. We mustn’t forget that, in order to build a working Jump Gate, two are needed. (though, scroll further down to address another form of fast-transportation) Again, building a Jump Gate off the beaten path and into enemy controlled space would be a key ‘Back-door’ for any successful, surprise invasion.

I imagine a limit to the distance between gates would be needed, something along the lines of 1 million gu or so.

Ship Yards Use your imagination…

Space Ports

Built deep in space, or wherever, these platforms come with 2 factories, a limited depot, and a port to purchase items. Without any resources and maybe with only limited AI transport, players would need to sell resources at the port, but for a definite markup to be able to build items. With a Defense Platform, A Space Port, a Shipyard and a sensor platform to hide them all, you could create a secret self-sufficient complex safely off the war path of your enemies…or in their back yard!

Electromagnetic Acceleration Rings

Ever read Ringworld, by Larry Niven? You should, and not just so I don’t have to explain myself. Well, in order to accelerate their ships to near light-speed velocities, they placed these rings evenly spaced around the Structure and ships would fly through the rings and be accelerated.

Well, this would be different, of course, as Faustus as already discovered FTL travel (you go, boyfriend) and K’luth ships aren’t made of metal. (you need that for the actual device to work) One of these platforms, when flown through, would accelerate the ship to about 100gu/p/s in a straight line for a fixed amount of time or distance.

Once traveling 100gu p/s will we be able to turn? Depends on the Dev team…but sure, why not? It’s not like you will be able to hurt anyone except yourself. These one way, Ship Shootin’ Rail-Guns, would help make the long trips between the stars much faster. Instead of 500 seconds from Ross to Cygnus, it might only take 50 secs?

Just some ideas mingled with an actual question.

Quotin from Gideon post about K'luth....

Recently, we have been able to salvage three very interesting components from some combat wreckage. A fourth device has had it's description moved here, as while it was present on the vessel you had us analyze, it shares the same enigmas as these other three devices. The devices I am referring are the Anti-Matter Torpedoes, Anti-Matter Jump Drives, Anti-Matter Engines, and Anti-Matter Mines. As you can already tell, these all share the common theme of Anti-Matter. The enigma is in their construction and the knowledge the K'Luth have of their functioning. Firstly, unlike every other piece of K'Luth technology, these are entirely mechanical in nature.

So juxt you are a bit incorrect K'luth DO have metal in there but I doubt its enough for those rings to accelerate a K'luth ship.

Wow... neither one of you answered my question. I guess I should be happy that Mr. Giffin addressed it at all.

So there is nothing set in stone, I am going to assume...

I have heard that the hope is for both, but maybe not at first.

I think it should depend on where the Engineer is that does the building.

If they're stationary in deep space, the platform will be too. If they're orbiting a planet, the platform is built in orbit as well.
