Three words:

Oh My God!

They have revamped nearly everything and the game is friggin awesome...

Don't try running it on anything less than a PR 2.5ghz machine and on medium settings though. It eats resources like crazy, but its gorgeous!

*drools*

Performance Tips:

- Reduce Shade effects to Low
- Reduce Textures to Medium
- Disable Anti-Aliasing
- Run in Windowed Mode

For some reason the HUD overlay causes a lot of FPS lag, most of which is avoided in Windowed mode due to the way in which Windows handles application and the memory management.

Gameplay:

The new physics model they are using is nice. It's a good development on from the old engine and now is using a semi-newtonian model.
You can no longer fly about inside space stations, but now you can build up your own stations and form them into complexes using a special kit. This means you can create truely massive stations which you can have fun navigating around in your little M5 class ships, or you can even eject and use your space suit to take a closer look.

The controls still aren't comparible to the Iwar2 or Freespace full newtonian models, but as a hybrid system it works very well and is a lot more functional and even challenging to fly well compared to the older X-Series games.

Combat is fun.

Thats what I thought... I was thinking maybe an X-Man 3 game since X-Men 3: The Movie is coming out soon... A game prequle like the Matrix games where to the third Matrix movie but he refers to Freespace and IW2... Are you talking about another X-Wing Game? Please enlighten us... I for one would like to see a Freespace/IW2 type game again...

It's a space flight, space fight, space trade game. Basically, you fly things, shoot things, build things, buy things, sell things. It's a very large scale game. Think Jumpgate combined with EvE.

I wasn't too keen on X2 myself. Very, VERY, VERY grinding. And complicated controls (don't get me started on the cameras).

NEXT GENERATION OF THE X UNIVERSE - X³: REUNION

The Sequel to the award winning X²: The Threat will introduce a new 3D engine as well as a new story, new ships and a new gameplay to greatly increase the variety in the X-universe. The economy of X³: Reunion will be more complex than anything seen in the X-universe before. Factories are being built by NPCs, wars can affect the global economy, NPCs can trade freely and pirates will behave far more realistically.

The Technology
Extensive development has gone into the X³ engine, making full use of DirectX 9 technology, to create dramatic visual effects and stunningly realistic starships. Coupled with the massively enhanced A.L. (Artificial Life) system, X³: REUNION will present players with an ever changing, evolving universe; where a player

It's like Elite, but in full 3d and BIG. And gorgeous. IMO it's probably the best Space trading/combat series of games and the longest running for the PC.
It's not really that well known in the US because it is developed by a german company and so is a much more European style game.
If you ever wanted a completely free roaming sandbox space game, then this is it. If you put the time into it, you CAN own the entire universe. (all 140+ systems)
It's realy hard to describe. It' just big and you can fly every ship in the game, from the tiniest Scout to the largest destroyers and TS class mega-transporters.

If your idea of fun is to build up a huge 100+ ship invasion force, go for it.

If your idea of fun is to micro managed 100+ stations and factories, go for it.

If your idea of fun is becomeing the most notorious pirate ever known...

You can't really get much more freeform.

First game to enable me to use my crossfire card properly

"X3 has detected you have a ATI Crossfire™ card installed and will automaticly optimize the graphics performance settings based on your system settings".

I checked it out afterwards and everything was up way high... Runs smooth too.
