perhaps, have 2 strains of ships, unsubbed and subbed.
unsubbed you have access to every ship class (barring stations lets say), but only supporting roles - so the carrier dread, missile dread, etc. subbing gives you the major combat ships.
that way you can get up to admiral etc. and itll give you something but not everything. other bonuses for ranking could be handy too.
subs have access to everything...
potential problem in that someone will only sub later once theyve ranked up but we can see?
also, perhaps extending the time it takes to rank up wouldnt be a bad idea. right now someone whos really working at it can make it to admiral in what, less than a month? you need to keep people engaged longer than that, having a goal to work to helps.

i like that idea, but making ranks harder i'd say is a BIG no no. i mean, people who rank up fast WORK hard for their rank. i have been supping for days now, all day to get VA.
allthough i do like that "free support role" idea, then i could use my aggy!

I stopped read this thread at page 3, so most of what I have to say has probably been said.
I stopped playing this game in 2003 when I thought my account was deleted (it wasn't so I regret leaving). Than in Jan 2009, I came back on, only too find that this game was dead. I stuck around fighting with the few other ICC for a couple months, in a desperate bid to save our systems, and even with only 10 ppl online it was still fun, but certain aspects I don't want to drudge up killed my fun.
This idea has been suggested before in some form or another, but never has it been so refined, and never has it (FINALLY) gotten attention from the men/women in charge (especially Faustus).
Darkspace is the only MMORPG i would EVER pay to play (infact its the only MMORPG i've ever liked.
If this idea gets off the ground, you could bet your @ss i'll be back, and I'd bet my @ss that most(if not all) the vets will be back as well!
And I'm sure that all of us would be members with the best memberships (and not for the benefits, but for the love of the game! I'm already a fleet admiral, so I'm not too concerned with benefits). I would also be more than happy to donate (a lot) to promote Darkspace fund as well as join every forum I can to promote Darkspace.
I will be monitoring this thread as this is the greatest opportunity we have to bring this game back to the way it was in its heyday of 2002-03
PLEASE FOLLOW THROUGH! AND LET US KNOW WHAT WE CAN DO TO HELP!!

sorry for double post, but I just check the dev log and I saw 3 things that made me VERY VERY happy!!
armour upgrades are balanced (this was a big thorn in my side)
more defence/type of defence bases
and free to play

Btw why not advertise this on some pages like http://www.mmorpg.com and so? There are also contests and special offers where people can win prizes raging from free games, subs, ingame items and things like that. You could maybe make a contest for premium membership there or prestige bonus?
I stumbled upon DS on that page myself for example. Tho that was long long time ago

we should open the first level dreads to unsubbed and make a new stronger class of ships like super dreads or titans for the subbed players.
