we should have different ranks for the different factions.
i.e. K'luth would have kluthy sounding rank names.
UGTO would keep the current ones.
ICC....something backwater-ish.
...yeah keep the same numbers and everything, just have different names.
though this wouldn't work if FA scenario is still around. This is for when DS goes for nothing but MV.
Yeah! woo! Go MV!

I sooo want this rank! I'll even get a nice white pair of pants, a blue blazer with a crest on the brest pocket and a nice white cap!
and I realized it was below Admiral...I have seen an episode or two of Star Trek...the Commadores were the guys right above Kirk that always end the episode Dead or a judge in a Court hearing... So...just slip that rank name in and bump the namesbut not the prestige requirements for the shipsup a notch and then you will really startle folks and you won't have to think of another new name

Well if DS went faction-specific names I think the UGTO should get Commissar. They sound like the sort of faction that would try to manipulate the populace's feelings. K'luth can have names like "Cockroach" or "Breeder" or "fly", something stupid and bug like. Or maybe use the crustacean theme, "Vice Crab" or "Rear Shrimp" sound good to anyone? Oh and "Fleet Lobster"! Can't forget that.
As post-FA ranks go, how about the following
Lord of the Admiralty (sure we'd get like 50 eventually but meh were going to have EIGHT Chancellors)
Minister (goes with the whole goverment-themed names)
Commadant?
Flag Officers maybe?
And Commadore should be thrown in somewhere, maybe put it where Second Rear Admiral is now, and boost all of those ranks up a notch. Would certainly cut down on the fleet admirals. Only problem would be that the rank requirements for the assualt dreads would have to be reworked and what not...hmmm...
[edit: Added Fleet Lobster and Commandant]

The whole problem with this system is.....I've been playing for more than a year now, and still am only a lowly admiral, and now I have to get even more rank? Crap. Crap Crap Crap......I will be sucked dry, Mr. Faustus. Great Ideas, though, I love the idea, but can I be promoted?
And just a historical note, Commodore is used still when two Captains or Admirals are on a ship and they don't want to be confused. It was used back as a real rank for a substitute when Rear Admiral of the Lower Half and Rear Admiral of the Upper Half were deemed to cumbersome, and paygrades weren't really adjusted like their Army and Marine Corps counterparts. People cried, and no more commodores. But in space, no one can hear you cry, SO LETS HAVE COMMODORES!

I don't like Grand Fleet Admiral, it sounds the same as Super Fleet Admiral. Not serious enough.
How about, after Fleet Admiral, you have Field Marshal. Idea is, you have the Fleet Admiral controlling fleets in a war, then you have the Field Marshal controlling the field of battle. (Incharge of all forces). After that, you can get into the whole government thing with Chancellor and hey, go crazy, add a third title called Supreme Chancellor right away! Like you said, 8 people already who would be chancellors so give them something to aim for too.

Oh, about the mission badge. Not a bad idea Faustus, but you need to make it so that a failed mission removes less, like 0.25 prestige for example. Because consider how easy it is to get a mission which you can't complete. Escort a transport to a planet (yet the transport has no intention of going there), Repair a ship at 1% hull in combat, by the time you target them they are dead, be the sole defender of a planet with 20 enemies invading it.
Or even better, don't add/remove any prestige for missions. Each mission has a prestige gain associated with completing it, let that be the reward. And if you fail a mission, who cares. Don't count it anywhere. Then this will be a stat to count (completed missions), which doesn't affect your prestige total (Since you get prestige at mission completion time) and yet can still be counted for badge purposes (if you want to make an "Ability to carry out orders badge or something". It will be more of an indicator to show how much of the bonus prestige is from missions.

I think the new ranks should be accompanied by a prestige reset.

I don't know about Chancellor.
Higher than that...hmm...
I think Warlord is the best title there. Is spiffy.

And Dem, why exactly do you object to Grand Admiral? It seems like a logical progression in the chain of command....
|
|
Just stating an opinion, Jux, that's all. I don't happen to think it's logical... most of us are used to hearing "Fleet Admiral" as the top rank, whether in the DarkSpace world or the real world. Therefore, "Grand Admiral" has an oddly superfluous sound to it. Also, I think it sounds kind of silly in the first place, hence I would rather go straight to Vice Chancellor, Chancellor, then High Chancellor, or whatever Faustus has in mind.
In short: "Grand" just isn't a well-fitting word, in my opinion, just like your opinion is that it's a logical progression, which I can see and understand.

How about the highest rank in the game is Emperor, which only Faustus can attain.
