I am glad everyone likes the story as it is progressing. I am currently back on duty but will be sleeping during my transition down time...

Not to worry though! I have already started outline work on Chapter 12. I figure I should have Chapter 12 done sometime within the next 24 hours. I am now going to go get about 10 hours sleep before I start night ops. You know.... go guard this, go guard that...

And imagine, I wrote the last chapter in two hours whilst on a Mountain Dew induced Caffine rush while I was up in the wee hours of the morning...

Give me 10 hours sleep and I should be writing like usual.....

And to all who support your countries troops... I Salute You!

Remember.... You may not like the Political Decisions of the Leaders, but us poor Military Grunts have no say where we go... Support us if nothing else...

Night All, See Yah In The Morning,

Rocko

Hello all you out there in DarkSpace land... I am very sorry for the delay from what I promised you all... If you have been watching TV lately you have seen things have been a tad busy once again. Be it known I am alive and well... We had a "Communications Blackout" in effect and I could not get access to the Internet to post Chapter 12... It is finished and I am doing the scetch work for Chapters 13 and 14... I think you will like them... Chapter 13 is a bit of a job since this one includes the K'luth... I am not overly versed in them so I am trying to write it hoping to do justice to them.

Now on to Chapter 12... or "The Calm before the Storm."

Enjoy

Rocko

*****Chapter Twelve*****

Rocko was contemplating his orders… He had been handed tough orders before these were the toughest he had ever handled. The crews were returning from their shore leave and working parties. “Communications… Have Captains Ceridan and Axianda come to my Cabin as soon as they can…” “Aye Sir… I will send out the message right away.” Rocko knew they would have a tough time of it… fighting the K’Luth was bad enough but fighting two of the most potent Fleets was almost madness. If he was going to pull this off he needed to talk to his two most senior combat specialists…

“Good to see you both… I need your help trying to figure out the best ways to get this job done with the least amount of death and destruction to our fleet. I need options gentlemen.” “Well Sir…” It was Axianda… “We have the equipment to get the job done, its just the tactics… I think we should go after the lone planet as they have said… If nothing else Sir it will limit the amount of Planetary Counter Battery fire we will encounter if we are detected. We have to consider the fact the K’Luth will most likely use the cloaking systems on their ships. That’s a good thing and a bad thing for us…"

"Good thing is they most likely will not use ECCM to detect us through our ECM since ECCM tends to defeat their cloak, and if they uncloak to use ECCM then they are really showing themselves… Bad thing for us is if they just cloak and try to find us visually. Our ECM could actually mask them even more. If they visually close to point blank range we could be in for a real hurting. I say we just run full ECM till we get a hint they are nearby then blast them with Active Sensors at max power to attack them.”

“I concur Sir…” It was Ceridans turn to speak… “It would be prudent to use the tactics we have trained with… My latest Intelligence Summaries suggest there is little current activity in the Target System. I think we should play it by ear so to speak.” Rocko was not liking the answers he was getting but had to agree… Most tactics currently used against the K’Luth were based on mass ECCM to try to overpower their Cloaking Systems… It might just work if they did the reverse… It was worth a try to be sure since they really didn’t want to use Active Sensors unless absolutely needed.

“And Admiral… there is always the Aegis System… the one that was developed at the Moon Base and installed in your ship, the Bunker Hill…” Ceridan was referring to the system that could link all ships within a 1,000 Gu area together. It made it possible for those ships to allow one central computer to determine how much of a threat a target was and prosecute them accordingly… The Moon Base had tested the system… sort of… it was said it could identify, track and attack any ship within weapons range automatically… what one ship saw, they all saw. It, like so many things on this mission, had never been properly field-tested. I guess this was one more thing to try out.

“We will see how that works out… It is just hard to believe one computer can control all 12 of our ships and determine what weapons to fire… and at what…” “I agree sir… but there must always be progress… and we can always revert back to the normal fire control if it doesn’t work. This system was supposedly made to combat the K’Luth specifically. You know how they love to pop in and out of a combat area…” “Yes I do… Ceridan I want you to keep your Sensor Frigates on the ball… I think we might just have to switch from Active Jamming to Active Sensors at a moments notice. That is all, gentlemen. Lets prepare to move out.” The Captains rose up, saluted and exited Rocko’s cabin. He was glad he had such good skippers… he wouldn’t have gotten this far without them.

“Admiral, all ships are standing to and ready to depart… all systems are on-line and within normal tolerances. The first Wormhole is ready to be created at your command.” “Very Well, move the fleet out. Set Wolf 1, in the Wolf 359 System, as our destination. Engage the Wormhole and set by Direct Path. Enter the Event Horizon as soon as we can.” “Aye Sir… We are entering the Event Horizon…” “God protect us all as we sail into harms way.” And with that they were off to K’Luth held territory to hopefully sow the seeds of distrust between the UGTO and the K’Luth… It might just by them the time needed to once again swell the ranks of the ICC Battle Fleets to meet the challenge that is a two front war. If nothing else they were at least striking a physiological blow… good for the ICC, bad for the K’Luth that’s for sure.

As they were traveling between Wormholes and into the great unknown, Rocko found himself pondering the situation… would they be fighting just one fleet or two, or would the fleets even be there? What would happen if those two fleets were off fighting some battle elsewhere and a third fleet was on guard duty? That thought had not occurred to him… there were so many intangible events that could be happening… so many things that could go wrong… “Computer… Calculate best estimated chance for completion of Primary Mission.”

The computer chirped and whirred and displayed simply… “87%” Rocko thought that was not too bad all things considered for this Tactical Mission Profile… Total Planetary Destruction… what was commonly called ‘Glassing a Planet’… Yes… Wolf 1 was to be turned back into the rock from whence it came. “Computer… Calculate the probability of all ships coming home safely given known Intelligence and Tactical Mission Profile…” once again it came up with a number… “64%” Not a good number…

“Probable Expected Losses?”… Another number… “30%”… Rocko decided it was time to stop asking the computer to make ‘logical’ answers. “Admiral…. We are preparing to make the last Wormhole into the Primary Target Area…” “Very Well, Every one to Action Stations… prepare for Planetary Bombardment. I think we are about to stir up the hornets nest.” “Aye Sir…” and with that they were gone.
